CHAPTER 4: The Shadows Gather

By the third day, the quiet street outside Thomas’s building was filled with people. News of the “miracle infant” had leaked through social media, bringing both the desperate and the greedy to their doorstep.

Among the crowd was Marcus, a wealthy local real estate developer known for his ruthless nature and deep pockets. Marcus suffered from a chronic, degenerative heart condition that no doctor could cure. Hearing rumors of a child who could heal with a touch, he dispatched his men to secure an audience with Thomas.

Knocks echoed loudly against Thomas’s front door. When he opened it, Marcus stood there, flanked by two imposing men in dark suits.

“Thomas,” Marcus said smoothly, taking in the sight of the elderly man standing tall without his wheelchair. “I see the rumors weren't exaggerated. You’re walking.”

“Marcus,” Thomas said coldly, blocking the doorway. “Whatever you want, the answer is no.”

“Don’t be foolish,” Marcus replied, stepping closer. “I am a dying man. Name your price. Millions, a new estate, security for life. Just let me touch the child.”

Leo shrank back into the hallway, holding Gabriel tight against his chest. Gabriel began to cry—a soft, distressed sound that seemed to resonate through the apartment.

“This child is not a commodity, Marcus,” Thomas said firmly. “He is a human being. Faith and healing aren't for sale.”

Marcus’s eyes hardened. “Everything has a price, Thomas. If you won't take my money, we’ll find another way to reach an agreement.”
