CHAPTER 5: On the Run

Understanding the danger they were in, Thomas knew they couldn't stay in the city. Marcus had power, money, and influence, and he wouldn't stop until he laid hands on Gabriel.

That very night, under the cover of darkness, Thomas packed a few bags with essentials, food, and warm clothes for the boys. They slipped out through the rear alleyway of the building, boarding Thomas’s old vintage station wagon that had sat unused in the garage for years.

As the engine turned over, Leo looked out the back window at the fading lights of the city.

“Are we going to be running forever, Mr. Thomas?” Leo asked, his voice filled with weariness.

Thomas glanced at the rear-view mirror, meeting the boy’s eyes. “No, Leo. We’re not running away. We’re looking for a place where Gabriel can grow up safe, surrounded by love rather than greed.”

As they drove out into the countryside, the quiet hum of the engine was joined by a soft, soothing hum from Gabriel. The baby was peaceful, seemingly aware that he was surrounded by people who truly cared for his well-being.

They headed toward the coastal town of St. Jude, a quiet fishing community where Thomas had grown up. He hoped the salt air and tight-knit community would provide the sanctuary they so desperately needed.
