CHAPTER 6: Sanctuary by the Sea

St. Jude was a tranquil town nestled against jagged cliffs and overlooking a vast, blue ocean. The air smelled of salt and pine, and life moved at a slow, deliberate pace. Thomas’s old childhood home—a modest wooden cottage near the docks—was dusty but sturdy.
For the first few weeks, life was peaceful. Thomas spent his days teaching Leo how to fish, how to repair wooden boats, and how to read classical literature. For the first time since his mother died, Leo felt like a child again. He laughed, ran along the shore, and built sandcastles while Gabriel rested in the shade of a beach umbrella.
Gabriel grew rapidly, not just physically, but in his awareness. Though still a baby, his gaze remained unnaturally clear and empathetic. Whenever someone in the village felt sad or tired, Gabriel would reach out his tiny hand, offering a silent warmth that left people feeling strangely uplifted.

Thomas was careful, keeping Gabriel’s gifts hidden as much as possible, attributing any good fortune in the town to simple luck.
However, peace in a small town is fragile. It didn't take long for local rumors to begin circulating about the old man who had miraculously regained his ability to walk, accompanied by two orphan boys who seemed to bring calm wherever they went.
