Chapter 6 - A Secret in the Safe

The sound of wailing police sirens finally cut through the night air, growing louder as squad cars raced up the long gravel driveway. Inside the study, the cold wind blowing through the shattered window chilled the room to the bone. Marcus stood up slowly, stepping over the glittering shards of glass on the carpet, and walked over to the desk. He picked up his phone, which he had dropped earlier, and confirmed that Detective Vance was pulling up outside.
Elena remained seated on the floor, gently rocking the baby, who had finally fallen back into a restless sleep. Her mind raced a mile a minute. The imposter’s words echoed in her skull: You can't keep hiding from who you really are. It was a threat, but it was also a horrifying reminder of the past she had worked so hard to bury.
"Elena, get up," Marcus said, his voice hard, lacking the warmth it once carried before the nightmare began. He offered a hand, but his eyes were guarded, distant. "The police are here. Vance is coming up. We need to tell him everything."
"You don't understand, Marcus," Elena said, ignoring his hand as she stood up on her own, adjusting the baby in her arms. "If Vance starts looking into who that... thing was, he’s going to dig into my life before we met. He’s going to find the files."
Marcus narrowed his eyes. "What files, Elena? You told me your family died in a car accident when you were a teenager. You told me you had no one left."
"I lied," Elena confessed, the words tasting like ash in her mouth. She couldn't keep up the charade anymore; the physical reality of the doppelgänger proved that her past had finally caught up to her. "My family didn't die in a crash. They were researchers. Geneticists working for a private bio-engineering firm that got shut down by the federal government fifteen years ago."
Marcus stared at her, stunned into temporary silence. Before he could demand more answers, heavy footsteps pounded up the stairs, and Detective Vance burst into the study, his service weapon drawn, scanning the room for threats.
"Marcus! Elena! Dispatch said there was a break-in and a shattered window," Vance barked, lowering his weapon slightly as he took in the ruined room. He looked at the broken glass, then at Marcus’s aggressive posture, and finally at Elena’s terrified expression. "What the hell happened here?"
"Someone broke in, Vance," Marcus said, his voice dangerously level. "Someone who looks identical to my wife."
Vance frowned, shaking his head. "A doppelgänger? Marcus, this isn't a sci-fi movie. Explain yourself."
"She's not lying," a cold, automated voice interrupted from the corner of the room.
Both men and Elena whipped around toward the computer monitor on the desk. The screen, which had gone dark after the window shattered, had suddenly rebooted on its own. A single text document was typing itself out letter by letter on the screen, accompanied by the rhythmic clack-clack-clack of an automated keyboard macro.
Marcus stepped closer to the desk, reading the words aloud as they appeared on the glowing screen.
