Chapter 4 - Darkness in the Hallway

The sudden darkness felt heavy, pressing against Elena’s chest like a physical weight. She clutched the sleeping infant tightly against her red top, backing blindly into the soft cushions of the leather couch. Her heart thrummed frantically in her ears, drowning out the ambient sounds of the large house. Across the room, the blue glow of the computer monitors cast long, distorted shadows across Marcus’s face as he pulled the heavy steel flashlight from the desk drawer.
"Stay right here," Marcus whispered, his voice dangerously firm. He clicked the flashlight on, cutting a bright beam of white light through the center of the dark study. The beam swept across the mahogany desk, the overflowing bookshelves, and finally illuminated the open doorway leading out into the dark hallway.
"Marcus, don't leave me in here," Elena whispered back, her voice shaking violently. "Whoever made that video... they're in the house. They're downstairs right now."
"That's exactly why I have to go," Marcus muttered, stepping cautiously toward the threshold. He kept his body low, holding the heavy flashlight like a club. He stepped out of the study and into the hallway, the beam of his light cutting through the shadows. "Vance is already on his way. We just need to hold out until he gets here."
Elena strained her ears, listening intently above the sound of her own ragged breathing. From somewhere down the hall, near the guest bedroom where Clara had retreated, came the faint sound of floorboards creaking. Creeak. Then, absolute silence. Marcus had vanished around the corner, swallowed by the darkness of the second-floor landing.
Elena stood up slowly, her legs trembling beneath her black pants. She couldn't just sit in the study and wait to be hunted. She needed to find a secure room, lock the door, and wait for the police. She took one step toward the hallway, her eyes adjusting slowly to the gloom, when a cold draft swept past her neck.
She froze. The windows in the study were securely locked. There was no wind inside the house.
A soft, mocking chuckle echoed from the darkest corner of the study near the bookshelves—the exact corner where the shadows were deepest. Elena spun around, swinging her body to shield the baby in her arms. The baby stirred, letting out a soft, distressed whimper in its pink clothes.
"Who's there?" Elena demanded, trying to inject false courage into her voice, though it came out as a desperate squeak.
A figure detached itself from the shadows near the bookshelf, stepping slowly into the faint blue light spilling from the computer screens. The blonde hair, the red long-sleeve top, the black pants—it was an exact mirror image of Elena herself. The doppelgänger tilted her head with a chilling, predatory smile, lifting a finger to her lips to signal silence.
