Chapter 11 - The Second Asset

The second duplicate stood in the doorway of the fallout shelter, her chest heaving as she panted heavily. Her blonde hair was matted with sweat and dirt, and her eyes mirrored the exact same hollow, predatory glaze as the first asset that had shattered the study window. She didn't speak; she simply lunged forward with unnatural speed, clawing aggressively toward Elena and the baby.
Agent Miller reacted with military precision. Before the asset could cover the distance between them, Miller raised her suppressed pistol and fired twice in rapid succession. Puff! Puff! The silenced shots echoed heavily in the enclosed concrete corridor. Both rounds struck the duplicate squarely in the chest, stopping her momentum instantly.
The asset stumbled backward, crashing hard against the steel doorframe, sliding down until she sat in a heap on the wet concrete. A dark pool of blood began to spread rapidly beneath her, soaking into the dusty floor.
Marcus stepped over fallen debris, rushing to check on Detective Vance, who was groaning in pain against the brick wall. "Vance! Are you hit?"
"Just... bruised ribs, I think," Vance wheezed, accepting Marcus’s hand as he hauled himself back up to his feet, wincing heavily. "Damn it, these things don't feel pain the way normal people do. Did you see how she took those rounds?"
"They're bio-engineered combat assets," Agent Miller said coldly, keeping her weapon trained on the fallen body in the doorway as she stepped past it into the dimly lit shelter beyond. "They have synthetic muscle fiber and adrenaline-gland overproduction. Unless you hit the central nervous system or the brain stem, they keep moving."
Elena followed closely behind Miller, keeping her body turned away from the bleeding duplicate on the floor. The interior of the fallout shelter was surprisingly vast, illuminated by flickering emergency backup lights mounted along the low concrete ceiling. Rows of rusted metal shelving units lined the walls, stacked high with expired MRE rations, dusty medical kits, and heavy glass canisters containing murky, yellowish fluids.
"Look at this place," Elena whispered, her voice echoing in the damp space. "My parents didn't just build a home. They built a staging ground."
"They built a research vault," Miller corrected, shining her light across a bank of old computer consoles sitting in the center of the room. Most of the monitors were shattered or dead, but one primary screen was blinking erratically, displaying a live satellite feed of the property above.
Marcus walked up to the console, staring at the flashing screen. Red tracking dots were clustered all around their house, moving in a deliberate, coordinated pattern across the lawn. "There are more of them outside. Not just one or two. A whole squad."
"They're closing the perimeter," Miller said, pulling a encrypted satellite radio from her tactical vest and rapidly punching a distress code into the keypad. She pressed the device to her ear, listening intently to the static-filled channel. "Command, this is Miller. Asset containment has failed at Sector Four. Requesting immediate extraction at the north drainage terminus. Do you copy? Command?"
Only dead silence answered her through the speaker, followed by a harsh burst of white noise and a synthesized, robotic voice repeating a single phrase over and over:
