Chapter 12 - Protocol Omega

The synthetic voice echoing from the satellite radio filled the underground shelter with a chilling finality. Agent Miller stared at the device in her hand for a split second before forcefully snapping the antenna down and shoving it back into her vest.

"Protocol Omega," Marcus repeated, his brow furrowed with growing dread. "What does that mean, Agent Miller? Speak English."

"It means our extraction isn't coming," Miller replied, her professional composure finally cracking just a fraction as she scanned the perimeter monitors. "Genesis corporate command has activated their fail-safe. When an asset breach becomes uncontrollable, they burn the entire grid to eliminate all biological and digital evidence. That includes this house, this bunker, and everyone inside it."

Vance gripped his service weapon, his face draining of color. "They're going to blow the property? With us inside it?"

"They're going to level a two-mile radius," Miller corrected grimly. "We have less than ten minutes before the subterranean charges detonate. Move!"

Elena clutched the baby tighter against her chest, tears streaming freely down her cheeks now. "My daughter... we can't let her die here. We have to get out of the valley."

"Then we run," Marcus said, his voice dropping all trace of hesitation. He grabbed a heavy crowbar from a nearby emergency supply kit, walking over to the sealed drainage hatch located at the far end of the bunker. "Miller, help me pry this open. Vance, cover our rear."

The group sprang into action. Marcus wedged the thick end of the crowbar into the rusted seams of the heavy iron drainage hatch, throwing his entire body weight against the tool. With a loud, metallic shriek of tearing iron, the seal broke, and a rush of cool, fresh outdoor air spilled into the stagnant bunker, carrying the distant scent of pine and rain.

"It's open!" Marcus shouted, tossing the crowbar aside. He climbed up the short ladder first, checking the exterior before reaching down to help Elena hoist the baby through the opening.

Elena handed the infant up carefully, feeling a profound wave of relief as Marcus scooped their daughter safely into his arms. She began to climb up the ladder herself, her boots finding purchase on the rungs as Agent Miller covered the bunker entrance behind them.

Just as Elena reached the top of the drainage pipe, a sudden, horrifying sound echoed from the deep recesses of the underground tunnels—a collective, metallic screech followed by the heavy thud of multiple running footsteps.

"They're right behind us!" Vance yelled from the bottom of the ladder, firing his pistol blindly into the darkness of the bunker.

"Get up the ladder, Vance! Now!" Miller shouted, scrambling up the rungs after him just as a swarm of dark, shadowy figures flooded into the shelter from the main corridor.
