Chapter 1 - The Drop That Shattered Everything

The bright nursery room smelled faintly of lavender and fresh laundry, a cruel contrast to the jagged panic tearing through the air. On the pristine white carpet, Nurse Clara knelt with trembling shoulders, her face stained with exhausted tears. She had just dropped the infant, causing a sharp, terrifying wail to pierce the silence. Clara scooped the baby back into her arms, pressing the small form in pink clothes against her chest, rocking frantically while mumbling incoherent apologies.

Elena, her blonde hair catching the harsh light of the ceiling fixture, lunged forward in a surge of pure terror. She wore a bright red long-sleeve top and black pants that seemed to blur as she shoved past the fallen nurse. Elena snatched the baby away, cradling her daughter fiercely, her chest heaving with ragged breaths. Her eyes flashed with animalistic fury as she towered over the kneeling woman.

"What were you thinking?" Elena shrieked, her voice cracking with adrenaline and wrath. "You dropped her! You actually dropped my baby on the floor!"

Clara cowered, clutching her hands together. "I am so sorry, Elena. I slipped. I haven’t slept in thirty-six hours. They scheduled me for a triple shift. I couldn’t keep my eyes open."

"I don't care if you haven't slept for a year!" Elena screamed, veins bulging in her neck. "You could have broken her neck! Get out of my sight before I lose my mind completely!"

Before Clara could scurry away, heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway. Marcus strode through the nursery doorway, dressed in a dark blue button-down shirt and black pants. His face was a mask of cold, terrifying thunder. He stepped into the room, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles twitched. He ignored the weeping nurse entirely, locking his intense gaze onto Elena and the bundle of pink in her arms.

Marcus stepped closer, invading their personal space, his eyes wide with a manic, suppressed rage. He grabbed Elena by the throat with one heavy hand, shoving her backward against the white wall with sudden, brutal force. He leaned in inches from her face, his breath hot and ragged against her cheek.

"What did you do to my daughter?" Marcus whispered softly, a tone far more terrifying than a roar.

Elena choked, her hands clawing desperately at his iron grip. "Marcus, stop! It wasn't me! It was her!"

Marcus didn't blink. He slowly turned his head to look at Clara, who was backing out of the room in absolute terror, whispering something that made Marcus’s blood run cold.

"She didn't drop the baby, Elena," Clara whispered from the hallway. "Someone pushed me."
