Chapter 14 - The Valley Consumed

The explosion didn't sound like a conventional bomb; it was a low, heavy concussive thump that vibrated through the core of the earth, followed by a rush of displaced air that flattened the surrounding pine trees like matchsticks. Elena squeezed her eyes shut, holding the crying baby tight against her red top, waiting for the sky to fall.
When she finally dared to open her eyes and lift her head, the valley below was gone.
Where their house, the nursery, and the underground research vaults had stood moments before, there was now only a massive, smoking crater glowing with the orange embers of deep-seated fires. A towering plume of dark smoke billowed upward into the night sky, blotting out the stars.
Marcus sat up slowly, coughing from the thick ash drifting up the ridge. He looked down at the infant in his arms, inspecting her frantically. The baby was crying loudly from the shock of the sound, but she was entirely unharmed, her small pink clothes spotless. Marcus let out a ragged, breathless sob of pure relief, pulling his daughter and his wife into a desperate, crushing embrace.
Detective Vance struggled to his feet a few yards away, clutching his bruised ribs and staring down at the smoking crater with wide, hollow eyes. "My God... they actually wiped it off the map. There won't be a shred of forensic evidence left for years."
Agent Miller stood up smoothly, brushing dirt from her tactical trench coat. She tapped her satellite comms unit, which was finally crackling with a faint, stable signal. "Alpha Team, this is Miller. Target secured. The primary asset and the descendant are both accounted for. Prepare immediate extraction at Route Nine."
Elena slowly stood up, leaning against Marcus for support. Her black pants were stained with mud, her hair tangled with ash, but the crushing weight that had lived in her chest for fifteen years had finally been lifted. The past wasn't buried anymore; it had been reduced to ash.
"Is it really over?" Elena whispered, looking at the federal agent with cautious hope. "Are the other assets gone?"
Miller paused, looking down into the crater before turning her gaze to meet Elena’s eyes. "The local facility is gone, yes. But Genesis was a global network, Elena. You and your daughter will have to live under federal protection for a very long time. They won't stop looking for the original."
Marcus tightened his arm around his wife's waist, pulling her close. "Let them look. We survived the worst night of our lives, and we're walking out of here together."

Agent Miller nodded grimly, turning to lead them down the north access road toward the waiting extraction vehicles. But as they crested the final hill, the screen of Miller's tactical tablet—lying face up on a rock where she had dropped it earlier—suddenly lit up with a single, unprompted notification.
