Chapter 15 - A New Horizon

The encrypted tablet glowed brightly against the dark rock by the side of the road, casting a sharp blue light across the damp moss. None of them noticed it at first, as they focused entirely on the distant headlights of the federal extraction vehicles idling on Route Nine. The nightmare in the white nursery felt like a lifetime ago, replaced by the cool, crisp air of a new dawn breaking over the distant mountains.

Elena walked hand in hand with Marcus, the baby sleeping peacefully in his arms, her tiny chest rising and falling in a steady, natural rhythm. The trauma of the past twenty-four hours had left deep scars, but as the first rays of golden sunlight crested the horizon, illuminating the winding asphalt road ahead, a profound sense of peace finally settled over the family. They were bruised, exhausted, and irrevocably changed, but they were alive, and they were together.

Agent Miller stepped ahead to open the rear door of the armored SUV, holding out a hand to assist Elena into the vehicle. "Step right in, Mrs. Miller. Your new life starts the moment we cross the county line."

Elena paused with one foot on the running board, taking one last deep breath of the mountain air. She looked back toward the smoking crater in the valley below, watching the last wisps of gray smoke dissipate into the morning wind. The ghosts of her past had been buried beneath tons of concrete and steel.

Just as she turned to climb into the vehicle, a sharp electronic chime echoed from the unattended tablet resting on the rock behind them.

Agent Miller froze. Her hand dropped from the SUV door handle, her tactical instincts flaring instantly. She spun around, drawing her service weapon from its holster, and marched back toward the rock where the glowing screen blinked rhythmically in the grass.

Marcus stepped defensively in front of Elena and the baby, his jaw tightening once more. "What is that? I thought you said the network was offline."

Miller didn't answer immediately. She knelt beside the rock, staring down at the high-definition display of the encrypted tablet. The satellite feed wasn't originating from the destroyed laboratory in the valley anymore. It was pinging from a secure, deep-water offshore facility located three thousand miles away across the Pacific Ocean.

On the screen, a new data file was automatically downloading at rapid speed, accompanied by a live video preview of a massive subterranean cloning chamber filled with thousands of dormant incubation pods, all glowing with an ominous green light.

Right in the center of the screen, a single line of text flashed in bold red letters:

“Subject One duplication cycle initialized. Awakening in T-minus 24 hours.”

Agent Miller slowly stood up, her face completely drained of color as she looked across the roof of the SUV directly into Elena’s terrified eyes.

"They didn't just have one backup facility, Elena," Miller whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "They had a fleet."
