Chapter 5 - The Reflection That Bled

Elena gasped as her back struck the edge of the desk, the sharp wood digging painfully into her spine. She twisted desperately, using her entire body to shield the infant in her arms, ensuring the baby remained unharmed despite the violent impact. The duplicate stood over her, pinning her with surprising, unnatural strength. The face inches from Elena’s was her own, yet the eyes were dead, hollow, and shimmering with a malicious intelligence that made her blood run cold.
"You can't keep hiding from who you really are, Elena," the duplicate whispered, her voice an exact twin of Elena's own cadence, right down to the slight rasp in her throat.
"Get off me!" Elena cried out, swinging her free arm and connecting a desperate blow against the imposter's cheek.
The duplicate didn't flinch. In fact, her head snapped back from the force of the strike, but she didn't cry out. Instead, she slowly turned her face back toward Elena. Where her skin had taken the blow, no bruise formed. Instead, a thin line of bright, crimson blood began to ooze from the corner of her lip, tracking down her chin in a sickeningly realistic manner.
Elena stared in horror at the bleeding imposter. This wasn't a hologram. This wasn't a trick of the light or a pre-recorded projection. It was flesh, blood, and bone.
Suddenly, heavy footsteps thundered back down the hallway. Marcus burst into the study, the bright beam of his steel flashlight cutting through the dim light. He saw Elena pinned to the desk by a woman who looked exactly like his wife, struggling frantically against the hold.
"Get away from her!" Marcus roared, closing the distance in a fraction of a second. He swung the heavy flashlight with all his might, catching the duplicate squarely across the shoulder.
The imposter stumbled backward under the force of the blow, letting out a sharp gasp. She released Elena and staggered toward the open window, smashing through the glass pane with a loud crash of shattering safety glass, disappearing into the dark night outside.
Elena collapsed onto the floor, pulling the baby against her chest, sobbing uncontrollably as shards of glass rained down around them. Marcus dropped the flashlight, falling to his knees beside his wife. He grabbed her shoulders, shaking her gently, his face pale with shock.
"Elena! Look at me! Are you hurt?" Marcus demanded, his eyes scanning her frantically. "What the hell was that thing?"
Elena looked up at Marcus, trembling from head to toe, pointing a shaky finger toward the shattered window where the cold night air rushed into the room.

"It wasn't a ghost, Marcus," Elena whispered, her teeth chattering. "She bled. And she knew every single secret I've kept from you since the day we met."
