Chapter 10 - The Secret Wall Panel

The hidden panel in the back of the study's walk-in closet revealed a steep, narrow concrete staircase descending into absolute darkness. The chemical smell of ozone and bleach billowed out from the opening in a thick wave, accompanied by a low, mechanical hum that rattled the teeth in their skulls.

Agent Miller pivoted instantly, sweeping her tactical flashlight down the concrete steps. The beam cut through the gloom, illuminating damp brick walls and rusted iron pipes that lined the descending shaft. Footsteps—heavy, dragging, and multiple—echoed faintly from somewhere deep below.

"They're coming up," Miller whispered, raising her firearm and stepping in front of the doorway. "Vance, secure the perimeter behind us. Marcus, keep your wife and the baby directly in the center of the stack. Do not let go of them for a single second."

Elena clutched the infant tighter, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird. "There has to be another way out. A secondary exit!"

"The utility tunnels connect the entire block, but the access points are locked from the outside," Miller replied without looking back. "Our only chance is to push through the shelter basement to the storm drain exit on the north property line. Move!"

Marcus didn't hesitate. He grabbed Elena by the elbow, guiding her past Agent Miller and onto the dark landing at the top of the concrete stairs. The air grew colder the moment they crossed the threshold. Every instinct in Elena’s body screamed at her to turn back, but the sound of scratching claws against concrete from down below erased any hesitation.

They moved down the narrow staircase in single file, Miller taking the rear guard while Vance led the way with his flashlight. The concrete walls felt slick with condensation, and the rusted pipes hissed softly as superheated steam vented somewhere in the labyrinthine depths beneath the house.

As they reached the bottom of the stairs, the flashlight beam caught a large, heavy steel door marked with faded nuclear fallout symbols. The heavy locking wheel in the center of the door was spinning slowly on its own, grinding against the metal frame as someone on the other side attempted to force it open from the shelter interior.

"Stop!" Vance yelled, raising his pistol and pointing it directly at the spinning wheel. "Someone's on the other side!"

Before Vance could pull the trigger, the heavy steel door slammed violently outward, knocking him off his feet and sending him crashing against the damp brick wall. He groaned, dropping his flashlight as he slid to the concrete floor, clutching his shoulder.

Standing in the newly opened doorway was another figure in a torn red long-sleeve top and black pants, bleeding profusely from a wound in her shoulder, yet grinning with a manic, vacant expression.
