Chapter 8 - The Price of Greed

The crystal chandelier overhead flickered once, casting dancing shadows across the devastated ballroom floor. Vivienne looked down at Harrison with a profound, quiet strength that made the disgraced corporate executive shrink back into the pile of shattered wrapping paper. There was no hatred in her eyes, only a deep, settling peace that came from knowing the truth had finally come to light.
"You asked me for a deal five years ago, Harrison, when Richard’s body was still warm," Vivienne said, her voice steady and clear, cutting through the heavy silence of the room. "You told me to take a meager allowance and disappear into obscurity, or watch you destroy everything my husband built. You called my son a beggar."
She shifted Leo slightly in her arms, the eight-year-old boy resting his chin comfortably on her shoulder, his messy light brown hair catching the amber light.
"You thought wealth was measured in bank accounts, stock options, and marble ballrooms," Vivienne continued, stepping closer to the edge of the debris field. "You thought you could buy loyalty, silence justice, and crush anyone who stood in your way. But true wealth isn't something you can steal, Harrison. And it certainly isn't something you can protect with fraud and cruelty."
Harrison gripped the federal court papers so tightly that the heavy cardstock tore down the middle. His face was pale, slick with cold sweat, his expensive navy blue three-piece suit completely ruined by dust, cake, and glass. "You don't understand... if the federal government seizes the primary trust, the board will collapse. Everything will go to public auction. We'll be ruined!"
"You ruined yourselves," Julian Sterling interjected smoothly, stepping forward to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Vivienne. He pulled a gold-plated fountain pen from his breast pocket and clicked it open with a sharp, metallic snap. "And the auction of Vance Global assets begins at nine o'clock tomorrow morning. I represent the primary majority shareholder—Mrs. Vivienne Vance. Every single asset you stole is already back in her legal possession."
Eleanor let out a sharp, ragged gasp from beneath the wreckage of the mirror, her eyes rolling back slightly as the sheer shock of the revelation finally overtook her fragile composure. "No... no..." she whispered into the dusty floorboards before falling completely silent, her head dropping back against a crumpled velvet gift box.
Harrison scrambled toward his mother, his aristocratic pride completely shattered, leaving behind only a desperate, pathetic shell of a man. He reached out to shake her shoulder, calling her name in a rising panic.
Vivienne turned her back on the wreckage, walking steadily toward the grand oak doors with Julian holding one heavy panel open for her and young Leo. The remaining wedding guests parted like a parting sea, staring at her with a mixture of awe and terror as she passed.
As they stepped out into the cool, crisp night air of the grand estate’s terrace, Leo looked up at the stars twinkling above them.
"Mom," Leo whispered softly, his hazel eyes wide and bright. "Are we really going back to our old house?"
Vivienne smiled, the night breeze gently lifting the dark strands of hair from her face as she looked out over the sprawling illuminated gardens that were, once again, entirely hers. "No, sweetie," she replied softly, squeezing his small hand. "We're going somewhere much better."

Before Leo could ask where they were heading, a sleek, tinted black town car pulled silently up to the terrace steps, and the driver sprang out to open the door.
