Chapter 10 - The Gates of Sanctuary

The heavy wrought-iron gates of the estate swung open in absolute silence, sliding back into the thick stone pillars as if recognizing the vehicle's approach. Vivienne stared out the window in absolute disbelief. This wasn't the modest downtown apartment she had rented after Harrison forced her out of the main family mansion five years ago. This was 'Blackwood Manor'—the legendary, secluded ancestral home of the original Vance patriarch, a sprawling gothic estate nestled deep within the coastal cliffs of Maine, long rumored to have been abandoned and condemned after a family tragedy decades ago.
The town car glided smoothly up the winding, pebble-strengthened driveway, the tires crunching softly against the ancient stone. Towering pine trees flanked both sides of the road, their dark branches swaying gently in the ocean breeze that carried the faint, salty scent of the Atlantic. At the end of the drive stood a magnificent, three-story stone manor illuminated by warm, welcoming carriage lights along the grand wraparound porch.
Leo stirred in Vivienne’s lap, rubbing his big hopeful hazel eyes as he sat up and looked out the window. "Mom... where are we? Is this a castle?" he asked, his voice filled with childlike wonder as he stared at the towering gables and glowing windows.
"It's a very old home, sweetie," Vivienne answered softly, her heart pounding against her ribs as the town car came to a complete stop beside the grand marble steps of the porch.
Julian Sterling opened the door from the inside, stepping out into the crisp night air and offering his hand to help Vivienne step down, carefully cradling the sleeping boy in her other arm. As her heels touched the ancient cobblestones of the courtyard, the massive oak front door slowly creaked open, revealing a warm, brilliantly lit foyer lined with polished mahogany wainscoting and rows of oil portraits depicting ancestors whose faces had been erased from the main family archives.
Standing in the center of the foyer, leaning heavily on an ornate cherry-wood cane, was an elderly man with sharp silver hair and piercing gray eyes that mirrored Julian’s own. He wore a classic tweed waistcoat, and his posture was as straight and unyielding as the stone walls surrounding him.
"Welcome home, Vivienne," Arthur Vance said, his voice deep, resonant, and carrying the unmistakable cadence of a patriarch who had waited decades to reclaim his legacy. "And welcome, young Leo. Your uncle Arthur has been waiting a very long time to meet you."
Vivienne stopped dead in her tracks, the breath catching in her throat as the ghosts of the past stepped out of the shadows to offer her and her son absolute protection.

Arthur took a slow, deliberate step forward, extending a steady, weathered hand toward the trembling woman. But before Vivienne could take his hand, a sharp, frantic knocking echoed from the heavy iron security gates down at the end of the private driveway.
