Chapter 11 - The Unwelcome Arrival

The heavy, echoing thuds against the distant iron gates shattered the serene silence of Blackwood Manor, carrying clearly through the crisp night air. Arthur Vance stopped in his tracks, his weathered hand resting on his cherry-wood cane as his sharp gray eyes flicked toward the long, winding driveway disappearing into the dark pine forest. A faint, humorless smile touched the corners of his mouth, though his jaw remained tightly clenched.
"It seems our uninvited guests recovered their transportation faster than I anticipated," Arthur said, his deep voice carrying an effortless authority that commanded the entire foyer. He turned his gaze toward Julian Sterling. "Check the perimeter cameras, Julian. Let's see who had the absolute audacity to follow us all the way to the coast."
Julian nodded crisply, pulling a slim metallic tablet from his breast pocket with practiced efficiency. With a few swift swipes across the high-resolution screen, the exterior security feed of the front gates popped up, casting a cool blue glow across his tailored charcoal suit.
On the screen, a battered luxury sedan sat idling right outside the wrought-iron barrier. The front bumper was dented, and the passenger-side headlight flickered erratically, casting wild, erratic beams across the stone pillars. Harrison Vance stepped out of the driver's side, his expensive navy blue three-piece suit completely ruined—caked in dried cake frosting, dust, and stained with blood from his cut palms. Behind him, Eleanor Vance stumbled out of the passenger seat, her beige lace dress torn, her hair disheveled, and her face pale with cold, unbridled rage.
"They bypassed the local jurisdiction checkpoints using an emergency judicial override," Julian noted quietly, his brow furrowing as he tapped another icon on the screen. "They're claiming we abducted you and the boy under duress."
Vivienne tightened her grip on young Leo, who had completely woken up from the commotion, his big hazel eyes wide with apprehension as he looked up at his mother. "They won't stop, will they? Even after losing the corporate shares, they still believe they own every person whose life they ever touched."
"They are operating on pure, desperate panic," Arthur replied, stepping forward to gently place a weathered, reassuring hand on Vivienne’s shoulder. His touch was warm and steady, instantly grounding her frayed nerves. "For thirty years, Harrison and Eleanor believed they successfully erased me from this family tree. They thought Blackwood Manor was nothing more than a ghost story told to frighten unruly heirs. They have no idea what it means to face the master of this house on his own ground."
Harrison’s voice suddenly crackled through the intercom speaker mounted beside the front door, distorted and screeching with manic desperation.
"Arthur! I know you're in there, you old fraud!" Harrison’s voice bellowed across the courtyard, loud enough to wake the surrounding forest. "Open this gate right now, or I swear to God I'll have the state police batter this door down for kidnapping!"

Arthur didn't even flinch. He simply turned his head toward the intercom box and reached out to press the brass talk button.
