Chapter 7 - The Midnight Summons

The heavy red wax seal on the second envelope bore the official emblem of the United States District Court. Harrison stared at it as if it were a venomous serpent ready to strike. The frantic bravado that had fueled his arrogance all evening evaporated instantly, leaving behind the hollow, desperate shell of a man who realized his empire of fraud had finally collapsed.
"This... this is impossible," Harrison stammered, his voice barely audible over the faint hum of the ballroom’s ventilation system. He tried to pull the envelope toward him, but Julian placed the heel of his shoe squarely on the corner of the heavy cardstock, pinning it to the dusty marble floor.
"Nothing is impossible when you spend a decade embezzling from orphan trust funds and falsifying corporate tax returns," Julian said, his voice as cold and unyielding as granite. He leaned down slightly, his gray eyes locking onto Harrison's panicked gaze. "Your accounts in the Cayman Islands were frozen forty-eight hours ago. Every offshore asset, every hidden shell company, and every luxury property you purchased with Vivienne’s inheritance has been seized under federal forfeiture laws."
Eleanor groaned again from beneath the shattered wooden frame of the mirror, her fingers twitching against the ruined wrapping paper. "Harrison... don't just sit there... call our lawyers..." she wheezed, her aristocratic voice cracked and weak.
Harrison looked back and forth between his mother and the chilling federal summons at his feet. The high-society guests who had spent the evening laughing at his jokes and flattering his ego were now whispering behind cupped hands, discreetly backing toward the double oak doors to distance themselves from the impending scandal. In less than ten minutes, the Vance family dynasty had transformed from an untouchable titan of industry into a public spectacle of greed and disgrace.
Vivienne stood a few feet away, still holding young Leo securely against her hip. The little boy had stopped crying, his big hopeful hazel eyes blinking slowly as he processed the sudden, massive shift in the room's energy. He looked up at Vivienne, his small fingers clutching the lapel of his formal suit jacket.
"Mom... can we go home now?" Leo whispered, his voice sounding small and tired against the lingering echoes of the chaos.
Vivienne offered him a gentle, reassuring smile, pressing a soft kiss to his pale forehead. "Yes, sweetie. We're going home. And nobody is ever going to make you feel small again."
She turned her gaze to Julian Sterling, silently communicating a depth of gratitude that words could never capture. Julian nodded subtly in return, lifting his foot from the federal summons so Harrison could finally grab it.
As Harrison scrambled backward into the pile of broken glass and gift boxes, his fingers trembling as he ripped open the court order, Julian stepped to Vivienne’s side, offering a protective escort toward the grand exit.
"Wait," Harrison choked out, his voice desperate as he stared at the final page of the indictment. He scrambled to his knees, ignoring the glass cutting into his palms. "Vivienne... please. We can make a deal. Don't let them take the main estate. It's all we have left."

Vivienne stopped in her tracks, turning her head slowly to look back at the man who had tormented her family for years.
