Chapter 2 - The Envelope on the Threshold

The white envelope slid across the glossy marble floor, coming to a sudden stop right against the heel of Vivienne’s satin shoe. The gold embossing on the heavy cardstock caught the soft, amber glow of the crystal chandeliers, displaying a crest that made the blood run cold in Vivienne's veins. It was the personal seal of Vance Global Holdings—the multi-billion-dollar corporate empire that her late husband had built from the ground up before Harrison systematically stripped her family of every single share.
Vivienne kept one arm securely wrapped around Leo, whose hazel eyes were wide and red-rimmed as he stared up at her face. With her free hand, she reached down, her fingers trembling slightly against the cool paper as she lifted the envelope. She broke the wax seal, her eyes scanning the typed lines with mounting disbelief. It wasn't a standard legal notice or a polite request to leave; it was an eviction order for the estate where she had lived peacefully for the last five years, signed just this morning.
"Looking for your inheritance, dear?" Eleanor Vance’s voice cut through the silence like a scalpel as she turned away from the tall, ornately decorated mirror, marching briskly toward the towering stack of wrapped wedding gifts. "You thought you could sneak your little charity case into our family event and pretend you belong here. You own nothing, Vivienne. Not this venue, not the clothes on your back, and certainly not the future of this company."
Vivienne crumpled the legal document in her fist, the thick paper tearing beneath her desperate grip. She stepped forward, shielding Leo behind the voluminous folds of her gown.
"I funded half of this reception, Eleanor," Vivienne said, her voice ringing out clearly across the stunned, silent room. "Every single vendor, every floral arrangement, and this entire ballroom was paid for by the trust fund my father left me. You don't have the legal authority to throw anyone out."
Harrison stepped between the two women, a cruel smile twisting his features. He glanced down at Leo with blatant contempt, as if the eight-year-old boy were nothing more than a stray animal tracked in from the rain.
"Your father’s trust was liquidated six months ago, sister-in-law," Harrison whispered, leaning in close so only she could hear the poisonous confession. "Sign the final asset forfeiture papers by midnight, or watch your son lose everything else he holds dear."

Vivienne stared into Harrison’s cold eyes, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She opened her mouth to speak, but before the words could form, a heavy shadow fell across the doorway behind them.
