Chapter 4 - The Stolen Signature

Harrison’s fingers grazed the edge of the leather folio, but before he could rip it away, Julian stepped deftly to the left, letting Harrison stumble forward against the mahogany refreshment table. Silverware rattled violently, and a crystal champagne flute tipped over, spilling its effervescent contents across the white linen cloth. The elegant guests gasped, stepping back in unison as the illusion of high-society perfection completely shattered around the Vance family.
"Touch that document, Mr. Vance, and you’ll find yourself answering to federal marshals instead of civil judges," Julian warned, his voice dangerously low and steady. He flipped open the folio, revealing a series of glowing digital verification seals stamped across the bottom of the parchment. "Forgery of corporate asset transfers carries a mandatory federal prison sentence. And considering these documents were filed under your personal notary license, the trail leads directly to your home office."
Eleanor stepped in front of her son, her eyes flashing with a desperate, cornered fury. She pointed a trembling finger directly at Vivienne, ignoring the murmurs rippling through the crowd of wealthy onlookers.
"She doesn't deserve a single penny of this empire!" Eleanor shrieked, her aristocratic composure finally cracking completely. "She’s an interloper, a gold-digger who trapped Richard Vance into a marriage he regretted until his dying day! That boy isn't even a true heir—he's a liability to everything we built!"
Leo whimpered softly, burying his face deeper into Vivienne’s beige satin gown. The harsh words struck the eight-year-old like physical blows, and Vivienne felt a hot tear slip down her own cheek. She gently stroked his messy light brown hair, her protective instincts overriding the terror gripping her chest.
"That's enough, Eleanor," Vivienne said, her voice ringing out with fierce, unbroken dignity. She stepped around the shattered porcelain on the floor, holding her head high as she faced her mother-in-law. "Richard knew who I was, and he chose me. You can falsify documents, you can steal shares, and you can humiliate my son at every turn, but you cannot rewrite the truth."
Harrison pushed himself up from the table, his suit jacket wrinkled and his face mottled with rage. He looked wildly around the room, realizing that every eye was fixed on him, recording his disgrace.
"Security!" Harrison bellowed, his voice cracking with desperation. "Get these trespassers out of my sight! Remove them from the premises immediately!"
Two burly security guards in dark uniforms stepped out from the shadows near the entrance, their boots heavy against the marble. They hesitated for a split second, looking between Harrison and Julian Sterling.
Julian slowly pulled a small black card from his pocket and held it up. "Before you touch them, guards, remember who signs your monthly retainer checks."

The guards instantly froze in their tracks, looking at Julian’s card in absolute terror.
