Chapter 9 - The Perimeter Breach

Julian’s body went completely rigid. In a fraction of a second, the vulnerable father vanished, replaced entirely by the lethal strategist. He strode swiftly down the short hallway to the control panel, his fingers flying across the keypad to pull up the external security feeds. Clara rushed after him, her heart pounding against her ribs as she peered over his broad shoulder at the flickering black-and-white monitor screens.

The infrared camera showed a single figure moving stealthily through the dense pine trees toward the back porch of the cabin. The intruder wore a heavy waterproof poncho, the hood pulled down low to obscure their face, but the silhouette was unmistakable—tall, slender, and moving with calculated, feline precision.

"It's Victoria," Clara whispered, recognizing the distinctive posture instantly.

"No," Julian muttered, shaking his head as he zoomed in on the monitor. "Victoria lacks the field training. That's a professional tracker. Marcus hired a cleaner."

"A cleaner?" Clara’s voice shook. "As in... an assassin?"

"As in someone sent to tie up loose ends," Julian corrected coldly. He reached into a hidden compartment beneath the wooden floorboards near the front door and pulled out a heavy, matte-black tactical crossbow, moving with practiced efficiency as he loaded a specialized bolt. "They found us faster than I anticipated. The tracker in the ring isn't just a GPS beacon—it's a military-grade transponder."

Clara stared at the diamond ring still gleaming on her finger. "Then take it off me! Throw it out the window!"

"If we separate from the transponder now, they'll know we know," Julian explained without looking up. "We use it to our advantage. They think they're hunting us. We're going to turn the tables."

Suddenly, a heavy thud echoed from the back deck, followed by the distinct sound of glass being carefully cut with a diamond-tipped tool. The intruder was trying to breach the kitchen window.

"Take Lily and stay in the root cellar beneath the pantry," Julian commanded, handing Clara a heavy iron-keyed flashlight. "Do not make a sound, no matter what you hear above."

"Julian, I'm not hiding while you fight alone!" Clara protested fiercely.

"Clara, listen to me," Julian growled, grabbing her shoulders and looking directly into her eyes with a terrifying intensity. "If I don't come back down that cellar hatch, you take the truck keys from my pocket, you drive straight north to the Canadian border, and you never look back. Do you understand?"
