Chapter 11 - The Bloodstained Key

The cellar hatch swung upward with a harsh creak, flooding the subterranean space with a shaft of harsh overhead light. Clara shielded Lily’s eyes with her hand, bracing herself for the worst as a pair of heavy tactical boots descended the stone steps.

"Clara."

The deep, gravelly voice made her entire body relax in an instant wave of relief. Julian stepped down into the root cellar, his black shirt torn at the shoulder and a fresh cut bleeding above his right eyebrow. He looked exhausted, but his dark eyes were burning with fierce determination.

"Is it... is it over?" Clara whispered, her knees shaking as she stood up from the wooden crate.

"For tonight, yes," Julian said, running a bloodied hand through his dark hair. He closed the hatch behind him and threw the heavy iron bolt. "The intruder got away, but I managed to slice his shoulder. He won't be back until he patches himself up."

"We can't stay here, Julian," Clara said, her voice laced with urgent fear. "They know this location. The next time they come, they won't send just one person."

"I know," Julian replied, stepping closer to her. He reached out and gently touched her hand, his fingers brushing against the diamond ring still resting on her finger. "Which is why we're going to use their own transponder against them. We're going to lead them straight into a trap of our own making."

"What kind of trap?" Clara asked, studying his scarred, resolute face.

"Marcus thinks he holds all the cards because he controls the board and the local police," Julian said, a grim smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Tomorrow morning, we drive straight into the city—right to the corporate headquarters during the emergency board meeting. We walk through the front doors in broad daylight."

"Are you insane?" Clara stared at him in disbelief. "That's suicide! Victoria and Marcus will have us arrested the second we step out of the car!"

"Not if we have the one piece of evidence they've been trying to destroy for fourteen months," Julian whispered, reaching into his inner jacket pocket and pulling out a small, old-fashioned microcassette recorder. He pressed play, and the unmistakable sound of Elena’s voice filled the damp root cellar.
