Chapter 8 - The Weight of the Past

The interior of the stone cabin was warm, smelling of cedarwood, old paper, and rain. Julian carefully lifted Lily from the back seat, cradling the sleeping toddler with a gentleness that completely contradicted his scarred face and imposing physique. He carried her up the stairs to a small, warmly lit bedroom under the eaves, laying her down under a heavy woolen quilt. Clara followed closely behind, watching the way his calloused fingers brushed a stray lock of brown hair from the child’s forehead.
When they came back down to the stone-walled living room, Julian poured two cups of black coffee from a vintage percolator on the cast-iron stove and handed one to Clara. She took it gratefully, wrapping her trembling hands around the hot ceramic mug.
"Alright," Clara said, taking a slow sip. "Talk. Why was your dead wife’s ring in Lily’s blanket?"
Julian leaned against the stone fireplace, staring down into the dying embers. "My wife, Elena, didn't die of a natural illness like the public was led to believe. The official report said heart failure. It was poison."
Clara gasped, nearly dropping her mug. "Poison? By whom?"
"By someone inside the inner circle," Julian said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Marcus wanted control of the family board seats. Elena was the primary shareholder. When she refused to sign over her shares, she fell ill thirty-six hours later." He looked up, his dark eyes locking onto Clara's. "That ring was supposed to be buried with her. It was locked in the estate vault. The only way it ended up in Lily's room tonight is if someone dug up the crypt or accessed the vault with a master code."
"And you think whoever did it is trying to frame me?" Clara asked, a cold chill washing over her spine.
"I know they are," Julian replied grimly. "Marcus wants you discredited so the courts will grant him emergency custody of Lily under the guise of an 'unstable household'."
Clara set her coffee mug down with a sharp clink on the rustic wooden table. "I won't let him have her. Whatever else is going on, I am protecting that little girl."
Julian stepped closer, his expression softening into something dangerously vulnerable. "Neither will I."

Suddenly, the low, steady hum of the cabin's perimeter alarm system beeped once from the hallway control panel. Someone had just crossed the outer property line.
