Chapter 2 - The Second Intruder

Julian stiffened instantly, releasing Clara’s hand with a fluid, dangerous motion. The quiet domesticity of the living room vanished in a fraction of a second as the scarred man pivoted toward the grand foyer, his body dropping into a defensive crouch that revealed years of hard training. Clara instinctively pulled sleeping Lily tighter against her chest, holding her breath as the heavy oak door creaked open to reveal a tall figure silhouetted in the hallway light.
"Julian," a cold, feminine voice called out, cutting through the silence like broken glass. "Put your hands where I can see them. We need to talk about the inheritance."
Julian let out a harsh, bitter laugh that held no humor. "You picked a hell of a time to break in, Victoria. My daughter is finally sleeping."
Victoria stepped fully into the light, her sharp features framed by expensive designer clothes and a look of absolute disdain. Her eyes swept over the room, pausing briefly on Clara, then locking onto the diamond ring still gleaming on Clara's finger. Victoria’s face twisted into a mask of pure fury.
"So it's true," Victoria hissed, taking a sharp step forward. "The replacement nanny isn't just cleaning up toys. She’s already wearing stolen family heirlooms. Julian, have you completely lost your mind bringing trash into this house?"
"Watch your mouth," Julian warned, his voice falling to a deadly whisper. He didn't raise his voice, but the sheer menace in his tone made Victoria halt mid-stride. "Clara stays. And that ring stays."
"You fool!" Victoria screamed, losing her composure as she pointed a manicured finger at Clara. "That ring has a tracker embedded in the setting! The police are already on their way here!"
