Chapter 1 - The Midnight Ultimatum

The tension in the sprawling, marble-floored penthouse was thick enough to choke on. Clara sat frozen in the plush armchair, her fingers trembling as she stared at the diamond ring catching the harsh amber light of the floor lamp. The small, rhythmic breathing of little Lily in her pink pajamas was the only pure thing in the room. Julian stood over her, his dark hair falling across his forehead, the pale jagged scar on his cheek catching the shadow. His silver rings clicked softly against each other as he clenched his jaw.
"I’m sorry, I’m sorry," Clara whispered again, her voice cracking under the weight of his unreadable gaze. She tried to pull her hand away, but his grip remained firm, warm, and terrifyingly steady.
"My daughter slept seven hours," Julian said, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly register that vibrated through the silent room. "She hasn't done that since her mother died."
Clara looked up, her tear-filled eyes wide with defensive panic. "It was a fluke! I didn't mean to fall asleep on duty. You have every right to fire me, Julian. Just let me pack my bag and go."
"I’m not firing you," Julian snapped back, leaning down until his face was inches from hers. The intensity in his dark eyes was overwhelming. "You think I care about a broken rule? Look at her face, Clara. She hasn't looked that peaceful in a year. What did you do to her?"
"I didn't do anything!" Clara hissed, her own temper finally flaring through the shock. "I just sang to her! I didn't ask to find this ring tucked inside her baby blanket, and I certainly didn't ask for you to sneak up on me like a ghost!"
Julian’s eyes darted down to the ring on her finger. "That ring shouldn't be in her blanket. It belonged to my late wife. Where did you really get it?"

Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs. She opened her mouth to lie, but the sound of the front door clicking unlocked echoed through the empty penthouse.
