Chapter 10 - Shadows in the Kitchen

The kitchen window shattered with a sharp, crisp tinkling sound that seemed to echo through the entire cabin. Clara clutched the iron-keyed flashlight in one hand and sprinted up the stairs to Lily’s room. The toddler stirred slightly at the distant noise, letting out a soft sigh, but remained deeply asleep. Clara gently scooped her up, wrapping the pink blanket tightly around her, and rushed down the back hallway toward the pantry.

The heavy wooden hatch leading to the root cellar was hidden beneath a woven rug. Clara yanked it open, revealing a steep flight of stone steps descending into the cool, dark earth below. She hurried down into the subterranean space, pulling the heavy hatch shut until it clicked softly, leaving only a tiny sliver of light filtering through the crack.

Above her, heavy boots creaked across the hardwood floor of the kitchen.

Clara sat on a wooden crate in the damp darkness, holding sleeping Lily against her chest, listening intently to the muffled sounds filtering down from the main house. A low murmur of voices echoed through the floorboards—one cold and clipped, the other low and gravelly.

"You stepped into a game you don't understand, Julian," a smooth, unfamiliar voice drifted down through the vents. "Hand over the girl and the ring, and the board will grant you exile. Resist, and the estate is liquidated by morning."

"You talk too much for a dead man," Julian’s voice echoed back, cold as ice.

A sudden, violent crash shook the ceiling above Clara’s head, followed by the sound of splintering wood and heavy bodies slamming into furniture. Clara bit her lower lip so hard she tasted copper, fighting the urge to scream as the ceiling dust rained down over her hair.

Then, silence fell. It was an absolute, suffocating quiet that lasted for three agonizing minutes.

Footsteps approached the pantry hatch. Slow, heavy, and deliberate.

Clara stopped breathing. Her hand drifted instinctively to her pocket, searching for the heavy truck keys Julian had left her. The latch of the cellar door slowly began to lift.
