Chapter 12 - Elena’s Last Words

The scratchy audio recording played softly in the enclosed space, sending a cold shiver down Clara’s spine.

“If you’re listening to this, Julian, it means Marcus successfully altered the medical reports. I’m not sick. The tea tasted bitter this morning. If anything happens to me, check the false bottom of the office safe. The ring holds the key to the offshore accounts.”

The tape clicked off, leaving a heavy, ringing silence in the root cellar. Clara looked at Julian, the last pieces of the terrifying puzzle finally snapping into place.

"She knew they were going to kill her," Clara breathed, her eyes wide with shock.

"She knew," Julian confirmed, his voice thick with repressed grief. "And she left the ring on Lily's pillow tonight to test you. She wanted to see if the person I hired to protect our daughter had the courage to wear the mark of our family through the fire." He reached out, gently cupping Clara's cheek with his rough, calloused hand. "You didn't run when things got terrifying, Clara. You stayed."

Clara’s heart skipped a beat as she looked up into his intense, dark eyes. The harshness of his scarred face melted away, replaced by a profound, raw vulnerability that she had never expected to see in a billionaire titan.

"I stayed because of Lily," Clara whispered defensively, though her voice lacked its earlier conviction.

"Maybe at first," Julian murmured, stepping closer until she could feel the heat radiating from his chest. "Marcus and Victoria think they've won. They think they can buy and sell everyone in this city. Tomorrow, we take everything back."

"And if we fail?" Clara asked, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"We don't fail," Julian said firmly. He stepped back, sliding his rugged black blazer back over his shoulders. "Get some sleep, Clara. Dawn comes early, and we have a board meeting to crash."
