Chapter 5 - The Ambush in the Garage

Clara instinctively shielded Lily’s face against her shoulder as the SUV revved its engine and began rolling forward, cutting off their path to the exit stairwell. Julian cursed under his breath, his hand sliding inside his black blazer with a practiced, lightning-fast movement that made Clara’s stomach drop. He didn't pull a weapon, but the sheer lethal posture of his body spoke volumes about the violent world he inhabited beneath his corporate billionaire facade.
"Stay behind me," Julian ordered, his voice commanding and absolute.
The driver's side door of the SUV swung open, and a towering man in a dark trench coat stepped out. He had a gold-rimmed pair of glasses reflecting the glare of the headlights, and a cold, calculating smile plastered across his face.
"Going somewhere, Julian?" the man called out, his voice echoing off the concrete pillars. "The police are currently securing the penthouse. You really shouldn't drag your hired help into your domestic messes."
Julian stepped forward, putting himself completely between Clara and the stranger. "Step aside, Marcus. You have five seconds before I forget we share blood."
Marcus chuckled, a dry, grating sound. "Family ties don't mean much when a multi-billion-dollar estate is up for grabs. And that little girl you're protecting? She’s the only thing standing between me and the entire portfolio. Hand her over, along with the nanny, and maybe I won't ruin your life completely."
Clara’s knees felt weak. This wasn't just a custody dispute or a stolen ring; it was a ruthless corporate and familial war, and she and innocent little Lily were caught right in the crosshairs.
Julian’s shoulders tensed. "Touch them, and you won't live to see sunrise."
Marcus raised a hand, and from the darkness behind the SUV, three more masked figures emerged, each holding heavy iron pipes. Julian didn't flinch. Instead, he reached out, grabbed Clara’s arm, and shoved her backward toward a hidden alcove.

"Run to the vintage sedan in the corner," Julian whispered fiercely. "The keys are in the ignition. Drive."
