Chapter 8 - The Ghost of Vance Global

The helicopter descended rapidly through the thick, low-hanging ocean fog, its landing lights cutting through the murky gray mist to reveal an ominous, sprawling concrete structure jutting out of the dark Atlantic waves like an industrial monolith. This was Vance Global’s decommissioned deep-sea drilling platform, officially designated Rig 4—a facility supposedly abandoned after an environmental disaster five years ago, but clearly operating at full capacity.

"Manual control is dead," Julian muttered, frantically slapping the override buttons on the dead console as the aircraft’s skids touched down on the rusted metal helipad with a jarring thud.

The rotor blades began to spool down, their deafening roar fading into a rhythmic whir. Before the cabin doors could even pop open automatically, heavy hydraulic clamps snapped out from the helipad surface, locking the aircraft's landing gear into place with a definitive, inescapable grip.

In the back, Clara gripped the handles of the strollers, her knuckles blue. "Julian, they're waiting for us."

Through the rain-streaked windows, a dozen men in unmarked black tactical gear emerged from the stairwell housing, their automatic weapons held at the ready, led not by Marcus Thorne, but by a figure stepping slowly out of the shadows—a tall, silver-haired man wearing an immaculate trench coat, holding a familiar golden-headed cane.

Julian’s breath caught in his throat. The cane belonged to his grandfather, Arthur Vance—the founder of the empire, a man who had reportedly died of a massive stroke in his Swiss villa twelve years ago.

"Grandfather?" Julian whispered, pressing his palm against the cold glass of the cockpit door.

Detective Miller unbuckled his harness with a casual flick of his wrist, pushing open the cabin door that he had previously locked. He stepped out onto the metal platform, walking directly toward the silver-haired patriarch without a trace of fear or hostility.

"Welcome home, Julian," Arthur Vance’s voice echoed across the open-air rig, carried clearly on the harsh ocean wind. "It took you long enough to follow the breadcrumbs."

Elena shoved the security mesh partition open with a desperate kick, her face hardened with a fierce, protective fury. She grabbed Julian’s arm, her fingernails digging into his sleeve. "Don't trust a word he says, Julian. Arthur faked his own death to build the syndicate you've been fighting."

Arthur Vance stopped ten paces from the helicopter, leaning heavily on his golden cane, a cold, calculating smile spreading across his weathered face as he raised his eyes to meet his grandson's stunned gaze.
