Chapter 3 - The Elevator Descends Alone

The soft ding of the private elevator echoed through the luxurious office, freezing all three adults in their tracks. Julian instinctively stepped in front of the desk, his hand sliding inside his jacket toward the concealed holster where he kept a licensed .38 caliber compact pistol—a relic from his corporate security days that he had hoped never to use again.
Elena grabbed Clara’s hand, both women pulling the twin strollers deeper into the shadows of the mahogany bookshelves that lined the eastern wall. The babies, sensing the palpable terror in the room, began to stir restlessly, though neither cried, as if trained by the constant tension of their fugitive existence.
"Stay behind the reinforced panel," Julian instructed in a hushed, commanding tone, his eyes fixed on the brushed steel doors of the private elevator.
The digital display above the doors flickered, showing the cabin descending from the penthouse suite directly to their floor, bypassing the intermediate floors entirely. That meant whoever was in the car possessed the master override codes—codes that only Julian, his late father, and the Chief Operating Officer, Marcus Thorne, possessed.
With a pneumatic hiss, the elevator doors slid open. The interior was completely empty.
Julian frowned, stepping forward cautiously, his pistol half-drawn. He scanned the empty carriage, noting the polished chrome handrails and the mirrored ceiling. Nothing was out of place. No footprints, no hidden assassin waiting in the corners.
Then, a faint ticking sound emanated from beneath the floor grate of the elevator car.
Julian’s eyes widened in sudden horror. "Get out! Everyone out of the office now!" he roared, lunging backward toward the women and the strollers.
He didn't hesitate. He grabbed the handle of the nearest twin stroller, wheeling it frantically toward the emergency stairwell door tucked behind the wet bar, while Clara pushed the second stroller with desperate speed. Elena clutched the titanium drive in her fist, sprinting alongside them as the ticking sound accelerated into a frantic, rhythmic buzz.

They slammed through the heavy fire door just as the elevator floor panel blew upward with a deafening roar, a shockwave of superheated air and white-hot flames tearing through the mahogany-paneled office, obliterating the desk, the divorce papers, and the entire northern wall of the suite in a blinding flash of orange fire.
