Chapter 6 - The Glass Between Us

The beam of the tactical spotlight cut through the sheeting rain, illuminating the interior of the cockpit in stark, blinding white. Marcus Thorne’s face was twisted into a cold, predatory sneer, completely devoid of the warm corporate charm he had worn for the past decade.

"Cut the ignition, Julian," Marcus’s voice echoed clearly through the external loudspeaker mounted above the stairwell exit. "You’re flying straight into a trap, and Miller is leading you right to the slaughterhouse."

"Don't listen to him!" Detective Miller yelled over the rising whine of the turbine, frantically punching override codes into the helicopter's navigation console. "Marcus is trying to ground us before the federal indictment goes public!"

Julian looked back at the cabin. Elena was holding both twin babies tight against her chest, their small faces buried in her coat, while Clara braced herself against the bulkhead with wide, terrified eyes. The glass of the helicopter window separated Julian from Marcus by mere inches—inches of reinforced polycarbonate that could easily stop a standard bullet, but wouldn't hold against sustained armor-piercing rounds.

"Julian, look at the copilot dashboard," Elena urged, her voice cutting through the panic. She pointed a trembling finger at the digital flight display glowing green in the dim dashboard light. "The transponder isn't pointing to the municipal airstrip. Look at the coordinates!"

Julian’s eyes snapped to the navigation screen. The destination wasn't a safe house or a police precinct. It was Vance Global’s private offshore facility in the Atlantic—the very same facility where his father had spent his final, paranoid weeks before his supposed heart attack.

Julian slowly turned his head to look at Detective Miller, his hand sliding back toward his concealed holster with agonizing slowness. "Miller... whose payroll are you really on?"

Detective Miller didn't flinch. Instead, a grim, humorless smile touched the corners of his mouth as he pulled a heavy iron-keyed padlock from his trench coat and slammed it over the cockpit door handle from the inside, clicking it shut with a definitive thunk.

"I'm on the winning side, Julian," Miller whispered, pulling a small detonator from his pocket and pressing the flashing red button before anyone could react.
