Chapter 5 - The Hand on the Iron Ladder

Julian raised his pistol, aiming squarely at the opening hatch above, his muscles coiled for a firefight. The cool night air rushed down the shaft, carrying the scent of rain and jet fuel, mixing unpleasantly with the smell of smoke.

Instead of an assassin waiting with a suppressed rifle, a man in a rumpled trench coat peered down from the roof platform. He raised both hands slowly, palms open, revealing a familiar silver ring on his right index finger.

"Put the gun down, Julian. If I wanted you dead, you wouldn't have survived the elevator," a gravelly, exhausted voice echoed down the concrete well.

Julian blinked, his finger trembling on the trigger. "Detective Miller? What the hell are you doing here?"

Detective Vance Miller—no relation, despite the shared name that had always been a running joke between them—slid down the iron ladder halfway, his trench coat flapping around his knees. He looked haggard, dark circles bruised beneath his eyes, clutching a battered tactical briefcase under his left arm.

"I've been trying to get a corruption warrant signed against Marcus Thorne for six months," Miller said, dropping his feet onto the landing beside Julian. His eyes flicked briefly to Elena, Clara, and the two twin babies tucked safely against the wall. "Your father left me a copy of that same ledger before he died, Julian. He knew he was being poisoned."

Elena gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "Poisoned? The coroner's report said cardiac arrest!"

"The coroner is on Marcus's payroll," Miller spat, stepping down the rest of the ladder and gesturing urgently for them to follow him up to the roof. "Move! We have less than two minutes before Marcus's private security team clears the lower floors and realizes you took the service shaft."

Julian lowered his pistol, sliding it back into its holster, though the knot of suspicion in his gut remained tight. Trust was a luxury none of them could afford tonight. He looked back at Clara and Elena, nodding decisively. "Up. Now."

Clara grabbed the first stroller, hauling it up the vertical ladder with an adrenaline-fueled strength she didn't know she possessed, while Julian guided the second stroller from beneath, keeping one hand on the infant's blanket to ensure safety. Elena climbed right behind Clara, her designer gold dress torn at the hem and stained with soot.

As Julian reached the top of the ladder and stepped out onto the vast, windswept expanse of the rooftop helipad, the rain began to fall in heavy, icy drops. In the center of the concrete pad sat a sleek, unmarked twin-engine corporate helicopter, its rotor blades already spinning in a slow, hypnotic blur.

"Get in!" Miller shouted over the whine of the turbine engines, pulling the cabin door wide open.

Elena bundled the babies inside, Clara diving in right after them. Julian scrambled into the co-pilot seat, but just as he reached to pull the door shut, a blinding spotlight snapped on from the stairwell exit housing behind them.

Marcus Thorne stood in the doorway, flanked by four armed mercenaries in heavy tactical gear, holding a suppressed assault rifle aimed directly at the cockpit window.
