Chapter 1 - The Shattered Inkwell

"We’re here to sign a divorce," Julian Vance stated, his voice cutting through the heavy silence of the mahogany-paneled office like a razor blade.

Elena clutched her white handbag tighter, her knuckles turning bone-white against the leather. "Give me five minutes, Julian. Just five minutes to explain everything before you put your name on that paper."

"Explain what, Elena? That you disappeared for a year, left me with a hollow house, and now walk back in here acting like nothing happened?" Julian stepped away from the massive oak desk, his dark tailored suit hugging his frame as he gestured toward the divorce papers resting neatly beside a crystal inkwell. "There is nothing left to explain. The lawyers drew this up months ago. You sign, I sign, and we pretend the last three years of my life weren't a complete lie."

"You think this is easy for me?" Elena's voice trembled, a tear slipping down her cheek as she stood near the towering doorway of the penthouse office. "You think I wanted to leave you in the dark? You don't know the half of what is happening outside these walls, Julian. If you sign that paper right now without listening, you are signing away more than just our marriage."

"Stop playing games, Elena. You always did know how to twist a narrative to make yourself the victim," Julian retorted, stepping closer, his jaw tightening as he fought to keep his composure. "I gave you my heart, my trust, and half of my father's estate, and you repaid me by vanishing into thin air without a single word of warning."

Before Elena could fire back a defense, the heavy double doors creaked open further. Another woman, Clara, stood in the threshold wearing a striking dark red dress, her hands flying to her mouth in utter shock as she pushed two identical strollers into the luxurious room. Inside the strollers sat twin baby boys, both dressed impeccably in matching black and white formal baby suits with miniature bow ties, blinking wide blue eyes at the unfamiliar surroundings.

Julian froze in his tracks. The sarcastic retort on his lips vanished as his gaze dropped to the two infants. He slowly walked over to the first stroller, peering down in absolute disbelief at the child staring back up at him with his own distinct facial features. The shape of the eyes, the slight curve of the nose—it was an undeniable, terrifying mirror image of himself. He turned back to Elena, his face pale, his breath catching in his throat.

"Elena, who are they?" Julian whispered, the anger completely draining out of his voice, replaced by a profound, suffocating terror.

Elena met his gaze, her eyes swimming with unshed tears as she took a slow step forward into the room. "They are your sons, Julian. And the people hunting us are the reason I had to run."

As the heavy office door suddenly clicked shut behind Clara with a deafening echo, a red laser dot flickered across the chest of Julian's tailored suit.
