Chapter 11 - The Residential Suite

The heavy steel door of the executive residential suite slammed shut behind Julian, the automatic electronic deadbolt engaging with a sharp, heavy thud. The room was luxurious—furnished with dark wood paneling, a plush leather sofa, and a king-sized bed overlooking the churning black waters of the Atlantic through a reinforced round porthole. But it was a gilded cage.
Julian paced the length of the carpeted floor like a caged animal, his fists clenched so tight his fingernails bit into his palms. The titanium drive was gone. Elena and the twins were still downstairs in Arthur’s custody. And in less than eight hours, the emergency board meeting would commence, handing total control of Vance Global over to Marcus Thorne and his grandfather’s syndicate.
He stopped pacing as a faint, metallic scraping sound came from the air vent near the ceiling.
Julian stepped back cautiously, his eyes fixed on the metal grille. A moment later, a small, cylindrical metal tube dropped out of the vent, clattering softly onto the carpet.
Julian knelt down, picking up the heavy steel capsule. He unscrewed the cap and slid out a rolled-up piece of heavy cardstock—a floor blueprint of Rig 4 annotated with red ink, along with a small, encrypted micro-comm device.
The micro-comm hissed to life in his palm, emitting a burst of static before a familiar, breathless voice whispered through the speaker: “Julian? Can you hear me?”
"Elena?" Julian whispered urgently into the tiny receiver, pressing it close to his ear. "Where are you? Are the boys safe?"
“We’re in the lower holding bay near the drydock,” Elena’s voice came back, punctuated by the faint sound of the twins whimpering in the background. “Clara managed to slip a spare keycard from one of the guard’s pockets during the scuffle. But Julian, you don't have until morning. Arthur moved the timeline up. The board meeting is happening in thirty minutes, not nine hours.”
Julian’s heart skipped a beat. "Thirty minutes? How is that possible?"
“They spoofed the time zones on the network to throw you off balance,” Elena replied frantically. “Marcus Thorne is already broadcasting the digital proxy feed from the main auditorium. If you don't get down to the server room and broadcast your father’s trust document to the SEC portal before the gavel drops, Vance Global goes public with the syndicate’s laundering protocols locked in permanently.”
Julian looked at the blueprint in his hand. The red ink traced a hidden maintenance tunnel running directly from the residential suite’s private bathroom behind the shower wall straight down to the primary server core on Deck B.
"I'm coming down," Julian said, his voice hard with resolve. "Keep the boys safe. And Elena... I'm sorry I didn't trust you sooner."
“Just survive this, Julian,” she whispered before the line went dead.

Julian didn't hesitate. He grabbed the heavy brass towel rack from the wall, jammed it into the seam of the bathroom’s tile-paneled maintenance hatch, and threw his entire weight against it until the fiberglass panel splintered open with a loud crack, revealing the dark, vertical drop shaft beyond.
