Chapter 12 - The Descent to Deck B

The maintenance shaft was slick with condensation and reeked of stale ozone and rusting iron. Julian lowered himself into the vertical drop, his fingers gripping the rungs of an old vertical ladder that descended into the absolute pitch black of the lower rig levels. Every muscle in his body ached from the concussive blast in the Manhattan penthouse and the grueling hours that followed, but adrenaline kept the pain at bay.
He dropped down the final few rungs, his boots hitting the grated steel floor of Deck B with a muted clang.
According to the blueprint, the primary server core was located just down the corridor behind a dual-biometric security door. If Arthur or Marcus had already updated the access logs, his fingerprints and retinal scans would trigger an immediate lockdown and flood the hallway with knockout gas.
Julian crept down the dim, flickering corridor, hugging the corrugated metal walls. The hum of the massive supercomputers grew louder, vibrating through the soles of his shoes like a steady heartbeat.
As he turned the corner toward the server room entrance, he froze.
Two tactical guards stood in front of the biometric scanner, their assault rifles slung across their chests as they spoke in low murmurs. But it wasn't the guards that made Julian’s blood run cold—it was the man standing between them, holding a portable decryption laptop connected directly to the facility's main data port.
Marcus Thorne.
Marcus was typing furiously on the laptop keyboard, a triumphant smirk on his face as a progress bar crept slowly across the screen. 98% complete... 99% complete...
"Almost there," Marcus muttered to himself, not noticing Julian creeping up behind him from the intersecting maintenance corridor. "Once the SEC portal is permanently rerouted through the syndicate's Cayman servers, old man Arthur won't even be able to claw back a single dime."
Julian didn't wait for Marcus to finish the upload. He launched himself out of the shadows, tackling Marcus hard across the metal floor, sending the laptop clattering away into the dark machinery.
The two tactical guards whirled around, their weapons snapping up, but before they could acquire their target, a deafening burst of automatic gunfire erupted from the opposite end of the corridor.
Bullets chewed through the metal walls, sending a shower of white-hot sparks cascading over the guards. Both men collapsed instantly, heavy body armor absorbing the initial impact before they crumpled to the grated floor.
Julian scrambled backward, dragging a struggling Marcus Thorne by the collar of his suit jacket. As the smoke cleared from the corridor, a familiar figure stepped out from the shadows of the secondary access tunnel, holding a smoking tactical carbine with practiced ease.
Detective Miller.
Except Miller’s trench coat was soaked with seawater, and his badge was pinned visibly to his chest, gleaming under the harsh fluorescent lights.
"Took you long enough, Vance," Miller said, tossing a fresh magazine into his carbine with a sharp metallic snap. "Now help me cuff this traitor before the rest of Arthur’s strike team realizes we bypassed the main security grid."
Julian stared at Miller in stunned silence, his mind struggling to process the sudden, violent shift in alliances. "I thought you were working for my grandfather."
"You really think a thirty-year veteran of federal internal affairs would sell out to a geriatric money launderer?" Miller smirked, kicking Marcus Thorne’s groaning body hard enough to keep him pinned to the floor. "I’ve been playing the long game inside the syndicate for three years, Julian. And tonight, we end it."

Before Julian could answer, the facility's primary alarm klaxons blared to life, flashing a blinding, rhythmic crimson across the server room walls as a synthesized voice echoed over the PA system: Facility lockdown initiated. Self-destruct sequence armed.
