Chapter 7 - The Offshore Beacon

The roof beneath the helicopter shuddered violently as a series of small, synchronized explosive charges blew the perimeter securing cables, tilting the helipad platform at a sickening fifteen-degree angle. The helicopter’s landing skids lost traction, sliding across the wet concrete amid a shower of blinding sparks.
"Hold on!" Julian roared, lunging across the center console to grab the collective pitch lever just as the aircraft tipped toward the edge of the skyscraper.
The turbine engines screamed, fighting against gravity as the chopper slipped off the precipice, nose-diving into the rainy Manhattan night before Miller pulled the cyclic back with savage strength. The aircraft leveled out with a stomach-churning jolt, banking hard to the east over the dark, churning waters of the East River.
In the back cabin, Elena and Clara screamed as the strollers slammed against the reinforced aluminum bulkhead, but both infants remained strapped in securely, their cries finally breaking the heavy silence with sharp, piercing wails.
"Julian! Unlock this door!" Elena yelled from behind the security mesh separating the cockpit from the passenger cabin, hammering her fists against the polycarbonate divider. "Miller is working with Marcus! The whole police department is compromised!"
Julian didn't answer. He was wrestling with the flight controls, his muscles burning as he fought against the crosswinds and the hacked autopilot system that Miller had locked into a pre-programmed flight path. He glanced sideways at Miller, who sat calmly in the captain's seat, bleeding slightly from a minor head wound, a faint smirk playing on his lips.
"You can't fight the syndicate, Julian," Miller said smoothly, his voice devoid of any previous panic. "Your father tried to be a hero. Look where it got him. A cold slab in the county morgue and a son who signed away his empire without reading the fine print."
"The divorce papers," Julian realized, the blood freezing in his veins. "The document I signed—it wasn't just a separation agreement."
"It was a complete relinquishment of marital assets," Miller chuckled, turning his head to look Julian dead in the eye. "Including your controlling shares of Vance Global. Elena signed over her proxy rights two years ago to keep you alive. Tonight, the transfer becomes permanent."
Julian felt the world tilt off its axis. He looked back through the mesh screen at Elena, whose eyes were swimming with agonizing sorrow and guilt. She hadn't left him out of malice or betrayal; she had signed away their entire financial empire under duress to prevent Marcus from executing Julian in his sleep.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Julian choked out, his voice cracking with emotion as he held the cyclic steady with one hand while reaching for the emergency circuit breaker panel.
"Because if you knew, you would have tried to fight them openly, and they would have killed you in a week," Elena answered softly from the back, her voice shaking as she rocked one of the crying babies. "I had to play the villain so you could stay alive."

Before Julian could override the flight computer, the helicopter’s primary navigation screen went completely black, and a synthetic voice announced over the intercom: Destination reached. Automated landing sequence initiated.
