Chapter 10 - The Proxy Vote

The fluorescent lights overhead flickered once, casting a sickly greenish hue across the polished mahogany surface of the conference table. Julian stared at the divorce papers, the ink of the heading glaring back at him like a death warrant.
"If I sign this, you win," Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low register. "You strip me of my family, you strip me of my marriage, and you leave me as a hollow figurehead running a criminal front."
"You already are a figurehead, grandson," Arthur replied, leaning back in his leather chair with an air of absolute authority. "Tomorrow morning at nine sharp, the Vance Global emergency board meeting commences. Marcus Thorne has already secured thirty-four percent of the voting shares through shell companies. With your father gone, and your shares tied up in probate, Marcus will take control of the entire shipping fleet—unless you sign those papers right now."
Elena stepped closer to the table, her hand resting gently on Julian’s shoulder. The warmth of her touch felt like an anchor in the middle of a freezing ocean. "Julian, look at the signature line," she whispered.
Julian squinted down at the legal document. Beneath the standard boilerplate language of separation and asset division, there was a handwritten addendum penned in his late father’s unmistakable ink-bleed scrawl.
To whoever holds this paper: The true controlling shares of Vance Global are not tied to the corporation, but to the private trust registered under the twins' names.
Julian’s breath hitched. He looked up at his grandfather, whose smug expression suddenly faltered for a fraction of a second—a micro-expression of pure, unadulterated panic that vanished as quickly as it had appeared.
"Your father was a sentimental fool to the very end," Arthur muttered, standing up from his chair with the aid of his golden cane. "Guards, escort Mr. Vance to the executive residential suite. The women and children stay here."
"Like hell they do!" Julian roared, lunging across the table, but before his hands could close around his grandfather’s lapel, four tactical guards swarmed him, pinning his arms behind his back with brutal efficiency.
"Don't fight them, Julian!" Elena shouted, struggling against the two guards who grabbed her arms as well, pulling her away from the strollers where the twin boys were beginning to cry in unison. "Wait for the morning meeting! Trust the trust!"
As the guards dragged Julian backward toward the heavy steel exit doors, he watched in helpless agony as Arthur Vance picked up the titanium flash drive from the table, slipped it into his pocket, and smiled.

"Sleep well, Julian," Arthur said calmly. "Tomorrow, you watch your empire burn."
