Chapter 9 - The Late-Night Visitor

The private elevator chime echoed softly on the top-floor penthouse lobby. Arthur stood up instantly, his paternal tenderness vanishing in a fraction of a second, replaced by the razor-sharp focus of an industrial titan. He stepped away from Maya, gesturing for her to stay near the inner study doors, but she shook her head and picked up her white cane.

"I'm not hiding, Dad," Maya said firmly.

The elevator doors slid open with a soft hiss. Marcus Sterling stepped out into the sleek, minimalist foyer. But he wasn't wearing his usual immaculate bespoke suit. His tie was gone, his shirt collar was unbuttoned, and his hair was wildly disheveled. Behind him stood two burly men in heavy winter coats—not corporate associates, but private bodyguards carrying encrypted legal briefcases.

"Marcus," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a low, lethal register. "You trespass in my building at nine o'clock at night? Have you completely lost your mind?"

Marcus let out a harsh, broken laugh that sounded more like a dry cough. "My company is liquidated, Arthur. The board voted me out twenty minutes ago. My accounts are frozen, my associates have all vanished, and my son is locked in his room refusing to speak to anyone. You didn't just win; you executed a corporate execution."

"You built an empire on intimidation, corruption, and the destruction of people who couldn't fight back," Arthur replied, taking a slow step forward. "I simply dismantled it."

Marcus pointed a trembling finger at Arthur, his eyes bloodshot and wide with manic desperation. "You think you're untouchable because you own the land and the boardrooms! But you forgot one simple rule of the game, Arthur. When a cornered animal has nothing left to lose, it doesn't run away. It attacks."

One of the bodyguards behind Marcus reached inside his heavy coat, his hand disappearing into the dark fabric.

Maya’s ears instantly sharpened. She heard the faint, metallic scrape of a zipper, the subtle rustle of heavy wool, and the distinct click of a safety latch being flicked off.

"Dad, watch out!" Maya shouted, stepping forward and swinging her white cane in a wide, sweeping arc.

The tip of the cane struck the bodyguard’s wrist with a sharp crack, knocking a heavy steel flash drive—or rather, a modified digital override tool—clattering across the polished marble floor.

Before the man could recover, Arthur moved with terrifying speed. He crossed the distance between them in two strides, grabbing Marcus by the lapels of his shirt and slamming him hard against the glass wall of the foyer, shattering the outer decorative panel into a spiderweb of cracks.

"You brought a weapon into my home," Arthur whispered, his face inches from Marcus’s terrified eyes. "You brought a threat to my daughter."

Marcus gasped for air, his hands clawing weakly at Arthur’s wrists. "It... it's not a weapon... look at the screen..."

Arthur glanced down. The bodyguard on the floor had dropped an open tablet device, and the glowing screen displayed a live financial ledger—not belonging to Marcus, but to a hidden offshore entity connected directly to Vance Global Technologies.
