Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the System

The mention of his late wife hit the room like a physical shockwave. The air grew impossibly cold. Arthur’s face tightened into an expression of pure, concentrated fury, but his voice remained dangerously low. "Keep her name out of your mouth, Marcus."
Marcus forced a thin, cruel smile, recovering some of his corporate arrogance. "Everyone in this city knows the truth, Arthur. You were driving the car when it happened. You walked away with barely a scratch, and your wife died on the asphalt while your daughter lost her sight in the back seat. You carry the guilt of a butcher, and you project it onto teenage boys acting like normal teenagers."
Across the table, Principal Vance flinched visibly, whispering, "Marcus, please, that's enough..."
"No, it's not enough!" Marcus shouted, leaning over the table. "He’s using corporate leverage to ruin a boy's life because he can't forgive himself for what happened to his own family!"
Maya, who had been sitting quietly in the corner of the conference room out of sight behind a high partition, slowly stood up. Her white cane tapped softly against the Persian rug as she walked into the light of the projector screen.
The room went dead silent. No one had expected her to be present during the executive session.
"My father wasn't driving," Maya said, her voice clear, steady, and echoing in the vast room. Every eye turned to her. "The truck that hit us ran a red light while your company’s logistics driver was texting behind the wheel, Mr. Sterling. The hush money your company paid off to the local police department to alter the accident report—we have those files too."
Marcus froze. The blood completely receded from his cheeks, leaving him looking suddenly old and frail. He stared at the young girl as if she were a ghost risen from a grave.
"You're lying," Marcus rasped, though the conviction in his voice had utterly evaporated.
Maya reached into the pocket of her grey pleated skirt, pulled out a small, encrypted data drive, and placed it right beside her father’s silver flash drive on the mahogany table. "My father didn't destroy your son’s future, Mr. Sterling. Your son learned cruelty from a father who believed laws only applied to people without money."
Arthur looked down at his daughter with a mixture of profound sorrow and fierce, unwavering pride. He placed his hand gently over hers on the table.
"The vote is unanimous," Arthur announced, looking around at the terrified board members. "Julian Sterling is permanently expelled, effective immediately, with no right of academic transfer to any accredited institution in this state."
Marcus slammed his fist down on the table, rattling the crystal water glasses. "You can't do this! I'll ruin you! I'll tear your entire empire down to the ground!"
May you like
"Try," Arthur replied softly, his eyes flashing with a cold, terrifying light. "And you'll find there's nothing left to burn."
