Chapter 7 - Aftermath in the Halls

The dismissal of the board meeting sent shockwaves through St. Jude’s Academy. By the time the afternoon bell rang, signaling the end of classes, the atmosphere in the hallways was thick with disbelief and nervous tension. Lockers slammed shut with echoing metallic rings as students hurried to leave the building, eager to escape the suffocating aura of impending disaster.

Julian stood by his locker in the senior wing, his hands shaking as he shoved his textbooks into his backpack. His navy blue blazer was discarded on the bench beside him, his tie yanked loose and hanging crookedly. The news had already traveled through the student network: he was gone. Not suspended. Expelled. Permanent record. No Ivy League recommendations, no athletic scouts, no safety net.

Thomas and the rest of his usual crew stood a few feet away, watching him with an uncomfortable mix of pity and self-preservation. None of them dared to approach him. In the hyper-competitive ecosystem of St. Jude’s, failure was a contagious disease, and Julian had just been quarantined.

"Hey," a voice cut through the silence of the emptying hallway.

Julian spun around defensively, expecting to see a security guard or an administrator. Instead, it was Maya. She was standing alone a few yards away, her white cane resting lightly against the polished floor, her eye patch stark against her pale skin.

Julian’s face twisted into an ugly snarl. "What do you want? Haven't you and your precious father done enough? You ruined my life!"

Maya didn't flinch. She took one measured step forward, the tip of her cane clicking softly. "Your father ruined your life, Julian. I just stopped you from doing it to someone else."

"Shut up!" Julian yelled, slamming his locker door shut with a deafening bang that echoed down the empty corridor. Several remaining students flinched and hurried around the corner. "You think you're some kind of hero? You're just a blind girl hiding behind a billionaire father who buys your way through life!"

"Maybe I am," Maya replied, her voice remaining eerily calm. "But at least I know who I am. You're nothing without your last name, and now that your last name doesn't mean anything here, you have nothing left."

Julian lunged forward instinctively, his fist clenched, driven by pure, unadulterated rage and humiliation. But before he could take a second step, a heavy hand clamped down firmly on his shoulder.

He looked up to see Arthur Vance standing beside his daughter, his dark suit jacket unbuttoned, his expression unreadable.

"I wouldn't finish that motion if I were you, young man," Arthur said quietly. "Your father's lawyers are currently packing your belongings into a cardboard box outside. I suggest you go meet them."

May you like

Julian stared into Arthur’s cold, unwavering eyes, realizing with a sickening jolt of terror that he had completely underestimated the man standing before him. Without a word, Julian grabbed his blazer, turned on his heel, and sprinted down the hallway toward the exit.
