Chapter 1 - The Broken White Cane

The morning sun filtered through the tall, arched windows of St. Jude’s Academy, casting long, geometric shadows across the hyper-polished linoleum floors. Maya remained on her hands and knees, the cold surface pressing sharply against her palms. Her white school button-down shirt was slightly skewed, and the dark tie hung crookedly over her grey pleated skirt. Beneath her black eye patch, a dull ache throbbed where her right eye used to be before the accident three years ago.

Julian, the school’s most untouchable senior, stood directly over her with an arrogant sneer curling the corner of his mouth. His navy blue school blazer was unbuttoned, revealing a crisp white shirt and a perfectly knotted tie. With a sharp, dismissive flick of his leather shoe, he kicked her white cane further down the hallway, watching it clatter loudly against the gleaming floor.

"Make her crawl for it," Julian commanded to the small circle of students watching from a safe distance, his voice dripping with casual cruelty.

Maya swallowed hard, fighting down the hot rise of humiliation in her throat. She drew in a slow, steady breath through her nose, refusing to let the tears spill past her lashes. She began to crawl forward, her fingers brushing the smooth, cold tiles.

Julian crouched slightly, snatching the white cane off the floor just as her trembling hand reached for it. He dangled it mockingly just out of reach, shaking his head.

"Please give it back," Maya said, her voice barely a whisper, carrying a quiet tremor of exhaustion rather than defeat.

"What will you do, tell daddy?" Julian mocked, his laughter echoing against the high plaster ceilings.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the far end of the hallway groaned open. A tall man in a bespoke dark grey suit and a stark black shirt strode through, flanked by two solemn associates in identical dark attire. The rhythmic clicking of their leather shoes commanded total silence in the corridor. It was Arthur Vance, Maya’s father, a man whose presence alone could alter corporate markets. He stopped dead in his tracks, his cold, piercing eyes locking onto the scene before him.

Arthur took three measured steps forward, his jaw tight as granite. "Take your hands off my daughter's cane," he ordered, his voice devastatingly calm.

Julian spun around in sheer shock, his arrogance evaporating in a single second. He stammered, his face turning pale, "She's... she's your daughter?"

Arthur didn't answer with words. Instead, he slowly unbuttoned his suit jacket, revealing the silver lapel pin of the school’s primary board trustee, and stared directly into Julian's terrified eyes.
