Chapter 5 - The Emergency Session

The mahogany conference room on the top floor of the administrative wing was bathed in the harsh white glare of midday overhead lights. Around the polished oval table sat the five elite members of the St. Jude’s Board of Trustees, their faces pale and drawn. At the head of the table sat Arthur Vance, not as a parent seeking justice, but as the principal shareholder holding the financial throat of the entire institution.

The heavy oak door swung open, and Julian’s father, Marcus Sterling—a formidable man with iron-gray hair and an expensive tailored suit—strode into the room, his face flushed with uncontainable rage.

"This is an absolute outrage!" Marcus roared, slamming his briefcase onto the empty chair next to the headmaster. "Pulling an emergency board meeting over a playground scuffle? Arthur, you’re letting personal sentiment cloud your judgment. Boys will be boys. Julian made a mistake, he apologized—or he’s ready to—and that should be the end of it."

Arthur sat back in his high-backed leather chair, steepling his fingers beneath his chin. He didn't blink. "Your son didn't make a mistake, Marcus. He executed a calculated pattern of harassment, backed by the institutional protection this board has provided him for the past three years."

"That's a slanderous accusation," Marcus snapped, looking around the table for support. The other board members nervously averted their eyes, staring intently at their leather-bound notebooks. None of them wanted to cross Marcus Sterling, but none of them dared look Arthur Vance in the eye either.

"Is it?" Arthur asked calmly. He pressed a button on the sleek control pad embedded in the mahogany table.

A large, high-definition wall screen descended silently from the ceiling. With a soft chime, a video file began to play. It wasn't the hallway incident from that morning. It was security footage from six months prior—footage that Principal Vance had sworn was permanently deleted. On the screen, Julian and three other seniors cornered a younger scholarship student in the locker room, systematically destroying his prosthetic leg while laughing and recording it on their phones.

The color drained entirely from Marcus Sterling’s face. He turned his head sharply toward the principal, who was currently staring intently at his own fingernails.

"Where did you get that?" Marcus whispered, his voice losing its thunderous edge.

Arthur stood up slowly, smoothing the front of his dark grey suit. "I didn't just buy my way onto this board to protect my daughter, Marcus. I bought it to ensure that predators like your son finally run out of hiding places."

May you like

Marcus clenched his jaw, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "You think destroying my son’s future will bring your wife back? Or fix your daughter’s eye? You’re fighting a war you already lost three years ago."
