Chapter 13 - The Pelican Briefcase

The heavy metal case hit the wet asphalt with a dull, echoing thud right beside Maya’s feet. Before she could fully lift it, David lunged down the remaining metal stairs, his hands outstretched like claws, desperate to reclaim the contents that held the definitive proof of his crimes.

"Get away from her!" Arthur roared, tackling his cousin sideways before David could reach Maya. The two men crashed hard onto the wet, slippery tarmac, sending up a violent splash of rainwater.

Special Agent Vance and her tactical team swarmed the base of the stairs within seconds, weapons raised. "Federal agents! Stay down or we will use force!"

David struggled beneath Arthur’s grip, thrashing wildly, but Arthur pinned him effortlessly to the ground, his knuckles white as he pressed his forearm against David’s chest. The storm raged overhead, lightning flashing across the dark sky and illuminating the grim, determined expressions of everyone on the tarmac.

Maya knelt down in the puddles, her hands searching the smooth metal surface of the Pelican briefcase until her fingers found the dual mechanical latches. With a practiced click-click, the latches sprang open. Inside, protected by thick foam padding, sat a single, encrypted solid-state drive and a stack of original paper documents bearing the official signature of the state transportation authority.

She pulled out the top document, her fingers tracing the embossed seal. Even without sight in her right eye, the raised lettering under her fingertips told her everything she needed to know. It was the unedited, unaltered accident report from three years ago—proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that the truck’s brake failure had been manually triggered via remote telemetry from Vance Global’s internal servers.

"Dad," Maya called out over the screaming whine of the jet engines as they finally began to wind down. "I have it. The original report is here."

Arthur looked up from pinning David to the ground, his chest heaving with exhaustion and adrenaline. He nodded slowly, relief washing over his tense features for the first time in years. He looked down at his cousin, whose face was pressed against the cold concrete.

"It's over, David," Arthur said quietly. "You spent your whole life calculating numbers, but you forgot that some things can't be bought off."

Agent Vance stepped forward, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs and snapping them onto David’s wrists as the federal officers hoisted him to his feet. "David Vance, you are under arrest for corporate espionage, conspiracy, and manslaughter. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

As David was hauled away toward the federal SUV, his head hanging low in defeat, Special Agent Vance turned to Arthur and Maya, holding out her hand to help Maya up from the wet pavement.

"You have your evidence," the agent said. "And the state attorney general has already agreed to reopen the criminal investigation into the accident."

Arthur took Maya into his arms, holding her tightly against him as the rain slowly began to turn to a fine, misty drizzle. But just as the chaos seemed to settle into a semblance of justice, Maya’s phone—resting in her coat pocket—vibrated softly with an incoming emergency alert notification from the school board.
