Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Boardroom

The heavy mahogany doors of the headmaster’s office clicked shut, sealing out the muffled murmurs of the hallway. The room smelled faintly of old leather books and expensive pipe tobacco. Principal Vance sat behind his large oak desk, sweating profusely despite the cool autumn air conditioning humming in the corner. Arthur Vance stood rigidly by the window, his broad shoulders silhouetted against the gray morning sky, while Maya sat quietly in an armchair, her fingers tracing the edge of her pristine white cane resting across her lap.
Principal Vance cleared his throat nervously, sliding a thin manila folder across the polished desk. "Mr. Vance, I assure you, Julian’s behavior was merely an isolated incident of teenage high spirits. We certainly do not condone bullying, but involving the board—or taking formal disciplinary action—might cause unnecessary friction within the community. Julian’s family, after all, contributes significantly to the school’s capital campaign."
Arthur did not turn around immediately. When he finally did, his face was an impassive mask of chilling control. "Friction?" he repeated softly, the single word carrying the weight of a physical blow. "Your student humiliated a disabled minor in the central corridor, and you call it high spirits?"
Maya kept her gaze fixed on the floor, listening to the tense rhythm of her father’s breathing. She knew this routine all too well. Every time they moved to a new city, every time a new school promised an inclusive environment, it always boiled down to donations, status, and protection for the privileged.
"I am merely suggesting," the principal continued, his voice rising defensively, "that a quiet suspension—say, two days—handled internally, would satisfy everyone’s interests without disrupting the upcoming academic term."
Arthur walked slowly toward the desk, placing both palms on the polished wood and leaning forward. "My daughter lost her sight in one eye because negligence was ignored, Principal. I will not tolerate negligence in the halls where she attempts to rebuild her life."
Principal Vance swallowed hard, looking desperately at Maya as if seeking an ally. "Maya, surely you agree that blowing this out of proportion won't help you fit in with your peers?"
May you like
Maya slowly raised her head, adjusting her eye patch with a steady hand. She looked directly into the principal's panicked eyes and prepared to reveal the school's darkest secret.
