Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Courtyard

The autumn wind whipped through the cobblestone courtyard, rustling the golden ivy clinging to the red brick walls of St. Jude’s Academy. Word of the confrontation in the hallway had spread through the student body like wildfire. By lunchtime, Maya was no longer invisible; she was the epicenter of a silent, suffocating storm. Students parted ways as she walked past with her white cane tapping rhythmically against the stone, their whispers hissing behind her like angry wasps.
Julian sat on the edge of the stone fountain, surrounded by his usual clique of sycophantic upperclassmen. His usual smirk was gone, replaced by a dark, brooding scowl that made his light brown hair look even messier than usual. He had already received two text messages from his father—a man whose temper was legendary—demanding to know why the school board president was suddenly threatening to pull their family’s corporate sponsorship.
"She thinks she's untouchable just because her old man wears a fancy suit," muttered Thomas, Julian’s primary lieutenant, tossing an apple core into the fountain water. "My dad says her family made their money in biotech. They deal in artificial limbs and cybernetic implants. Creepy stuff."
Julian stood up abruptly, brushing invisible dust from his navy blue blazer. "Her dad’s just a paper-pusher with a god complex. He can't do anything to my family. The board protects us. They always have."
Despite his bravado, Julian’s hands were clenched tightly into fists inside his trouser pockets. He couldn't shake the memory of Arthur Vance’s eyes—eyes that didn't look angry, but rather calculated, as if assessing the exact cost of dismantling Julian’s entire existence.
Maya stopped a few yards away from the fountain, her white cane extended to check for the drop-off near the water. She didn't flinch as Julian approached her, his leather shoes clicking aggressively against the stone.
"You think you’ve won something, don't you?" Julian hissed, stepping directly into her personal space. "Your little stunt in the hallway isn't going to change how people look at you. You’re a freak with one eye, and no amount of corporate muscle is ever going to change that."
Maya didn't step back. She tilted her chin up, her lone visible eye gleaming with quiet defiance. "You care so much about power, Julian, because you’re terrified of what happens when someone takes it away from you."
Before Julian could raise his hand to knock her cane aside, a sharp click-clack echoed across the courtyard. One of the school security guards was walking toward them with heavy, deliberate steps, holding a laminated pink slip.

"Julian Vance," the guard called out, his voice echoing off the stone walls. "Principal’s office. Immediately. Your father is on the phone."
