Chapter 8 - The Kitchen Breach

The scream was high-pitched and abrupt, cutting off mid-air as if someone had clamped a hand over Lily’s mouth. Daniel bolted down the hallway before Vance or Clara could react, his shoulders slamming against the swinging kitchen door. The room was bathed in the pale moonlight pouring through the frosted glass of the back patio door.
Lily’s white plate lay shattered on the linoleum floor, the sandwich smashed into a mess of bread and turkey. But Lily was gone. The patio door stood wide open, the cold night wind whipping the sheer white curtains into a frantic dance against the ceiling.
Daniel rushed to the threshold, stepping out onto the frost-covered wooden deck. The backyard was empty, bordered by the dark, looming shadows of the pine forest that wrapped around the perimeter of the suburban development. A single set of small footprints led away from the steps toward the woodline, accompanied by heavy, adult boots that crushed the frozen grass.
"Lily!" Daniel shouted into the freezing darkness, his voice cracking with panic.
Clara stumbled out onto the deck behind him, her bare feet instantly freezing against the wood. She stared at the empty yard, her hands flying to her mouth as a muffled sob escaped her throat. "They took her. They took my baby."
Agent Vance stepped through the patio door last, his movements calm and unhurried as he adjusted his rimless glasses. He looked down at the shattered plate on the kitchen floor, then out toward the dark tree line.
"It appears your operational non-compliance has triggered an immediate security extraction," Vance said smoothly, checking his wristwatch. "The board considers your daughter the primary emotional anchor keeping you tethered to human motivations. Removing her stabilizes your neural output for the integration process tomorrow."
Daniel spun around, grabbing Vance by the lapels of his charcoal trench coat and slamming him back against the wooden siding of the house. The agent’s glasses slipped down his nose, but his expression remained unnervingly serene.
"Where is my daughter?" Daniel roared, his knuckles white as he twisted the fabric of the coat. "If you hurt a single hair on her head, I will burn your entire grid to the ground!"
May you like
Vance reached up with two fingers, prying Daniel’s grip away with surprising strength. He straightened his coat before speaking. "You can't burn what you are already a part of, Mr. Reynolds. But if you want to see your daughter before the morning council meeting, you need to look inside the floor vent beneath the dining room table."
