Chapter 1 - The First Whisper

The hallway smelled faintly of floor wax and roasted garlic from the kitchen. Lily stood near the wainscoting, balancing the white ceramic plate with both hands. Her light pink cardigan swallowed her small shoulders, and the floral dress peeked out beneath the hem. Daniel knelt on the hardwood floor, his dark blazer pulling tight across his broad back as he met her height. His neatly trimmed beard caught the warm light of the wall sconce, making him look like the embodiment of safety. Yet the words she delivered cracked the foundation of their entire existence.
"Mommy said you hear everything," Lily whispered.
Daniel’s smile froze. The sandwich on the plate—cut precisely into triangles with the crusts removed—suddenly felt like a heavy stone. He glanced past his daughter toward the archway leading to the living room. Clara stood there, her cream blouse with its delicate bow collar suddenly looking like a theatrical costume. Her red hair caught the edge of the shadow.
Clara raised a trembling hand to cover her mouth. Her eyes widened, reflecting a panic she had spent years trying to conceal.
"Daniel," Clara said quietly, her voice trembling as she stepped forward. "Please let me explain."
Daniel stood up slowly, his joints popping in the tense silence of the corridor. He looked past her to the white wall pillar where the baseboard met the crown molding. A tiny, circular glint of glass stared back at him from a seam he had painted over a dozen times.
"You were recording my entire life?" Daniel asked, his voice dropping into a register so cold it made Lily step back.
Clara shook her head rapidly, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "It wasn't about control, Daniel. It was about safety. You have to listen to what happened before we moved into this house."
"Safety?" Daniel stepped toward the pillar, ignoring his wife entirely. With a sharp flick of his car key, he popped open the magnetic plastic panel. A nest of red and black wires spilled out into the open air, connected to a blinking digital transceiver. "You turned our home into a panopticon. Who else is watching, Clara? Who else is listening to my daughter sleep?"

Before Clara could answer, a sharp chime echoed from the transceiver hidden deep inside the wall cavity.
