Chapter 14 - The Final Code
The tactical drone descended below the tree line, its bright white searchlight sweeping across the clearing and blinding them with its glare. The metallic hum of its rotors vibrated in their teeth. Julian slammed his fist down onto the enter key of his console, locking the uplink frequency between the van and the municipal grid beneath the city.
"It's ready," Julian shouted over the roar of the rotors. "You need to interface with the van's terminal directly, Daniel. Use the neural port behind your ear—the one Julian hid in your childhood scar."
Daniel froze. He reached up with trembling fingers, feeling the faint, raised ridge of scar tissue behind his left ear that he had assumed was from a playground accident when he was six years old. It wasn't a scar at all; it was an access port installed before he even had memories of his own.
"Do it, Daniel," Clara urged, holding a sleeping Lily tight against her chest while tears tracked through the dirt on her face. "End this before they take everything from us."
Daniel didn't hesitate anymore. He grabbed the thick fiber-optic cable dangling from the console and pressed the silver connector firmly against the base of his skull.
A sharp, white-hot flash of pain lanced through his brain, followed instantly by an overwhelming torrent of data rushing through his nervous system. He saw the entire city spread out below him like a glowing web of light—the traffic grids, the subway lines, the smart homes, the wall pillars with their hidden cameras. He felt the digital presence of Agent Vance and his syndicate staring back at him through a thousand remote lenses across the state.
With a final, desperate act of will, Daniel seized control of the transit hub's emergency shutdown codes and routed the incoming drone's electromagnetic pulse straight back up through the primary optical network into Vance's central server farm.
