Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Wiring

The electronic chime cut through the suffocating tension of the hallway like a scalpel. Daniel stared at the blinking red diode on the exposed circuit board inside the white pillar. The LED pulsed at a steady, rhythmic interval, signaling an active data upload. His breathing turned shallow as the reality of the past five years settled over his shoulders like a lead vest. Every conversation, every argument, every quiet moment of doubt he thought belonged only to him had been captured, compressed, and streamed to an unknown destination.

"Turn it off," Daniel demanded, his voice dangerously low. He kept his back turned to Clara, unable to look at the woman he had trusted with his name, his home, and his child.

"I can't just turn it off," Clara said, her voice cracking as she took a hesitant step closer to the threshold. "If I cut the feed manually, a redundancy protocol triggers at the off-site facility. They send someone, Daniel. They think we're compromised."

Daniel whipped around, his dark eyes blazing with a mixture of betrayal and fury. "They? Who the hell is 'they,' Clara? Are you working for an agency? Is this some kind of corporate espionage? Look at me and tell me the truth for once in your life!"

Clara flinched, pulling the bow collar of her cream blouse tight against her throat as if shielding herself from a blow. "It’s not the government, and it’s not a corporation. It’s my brother, Julian. He set up the grid before we got married."

Lily, sensing the rising storm, retreated silently down the hallway toward the kitchen, clutching the white plate against her chest like a shield. Daniel watched her go, a sharp pang of guilt stabbing at his chest. His daughter was living in a spy thriller scripted by her own mother.

"Your brother died in a climbing accident in Montana three years ago," Daniel said, taking a slow step toward Clara. "I went to his funeral. I held the folded flag."

Clara shook her head, a hysterical laugh escaping her lips. "That’s what the obituary said, Daniel. But Julian didn't die. He went deep underground to escape the people who are really hunting us."

Daniel stared at her, the blood draining from his face as the transceiver in the wall suddenly emitted a burst of static, followed by a synthesized voice speaking his exact childhood address in Chicago.
