Chapter 12 - The Perimeter Sweep

The heavy thud of boots directly above their heads kicked loose a shower of dust and dried mortar from the low ceiling of the drainage tunnel. Daniel pulled Clara hard against the damp concrete wall, pressing his palm over her mouth to silence her breathing. Above them, the muffled sound of voices echoed through the floor joists.

"Subject B has vacated the primary residence," Agent Vance’s voice came through a comm-link, clear and sharp despite the barrier of the flooring. "Sweep the crawlspace and the drainage network. They can't have gotten far on foot."

Daniel’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. He grabbed Clara’s hand, pulling her deeper into the labyrinth of concrete pipes as the beam of a high-intensity tactical flashlight swept across the entrance of their tunnel fifty yards behind them. The harsh white light cut through the damp darkness, painting the concrete walls in stark relief.

"This way," Daniel hissed, spotting a narrow vertical service ladder leading up to a rusted maintenance hatch set into the asphalt of the subdivision's access road.

They scrambled up the iron rungs, Daniel pushing the heavy iron hatch upward with his shoulder. It groaned in protest, rusted hinges popping with a sound that seemed deafening in the quiet night air. He thrust his head out first, scanning the empty street. The amber glow of the streetlights cast long, deserted shadows across the manicured lawns.

Daniel pulled Clara up onto the pavement, and they ducked behind a row of overgrown boxwood hedges bordering the nearest neighbor's driveway.

From their vantage point, they could see Agent Vance and two operatives in dark tactical gear emerge from the side utility door of their own house, carrying scanning equipment that tracked the unique frequency of the neural band Lily was wearing.

"They're heading toward the northern ridge," Vance spoke into his radio, his gaze fixed on a glowing tactical tracker in his palm. "Activate the perimeter drones. We terminate the extraction if they cross the county line."

Clara clutched Daniel's arm, her voice shaking violently. "They're going to use the drones to take out the van, Daniel. Julian and Lily are still up there."

Daniel stared at the glowing red navigation lights of a small quadcopter lifting off from a rooftop three houses down, its cameras panning directly toward the dark silhouette of the northern woods.
