Chapter 3 - The Chicago File

The synthesized voice echoing from the wall pillar rattled off the street number of the modest brick home where Daniel had lived when he was seven years old. The cadence was robotic, devoid of emotion, yet it recited details about his mother's flower garden and the exact date his father walked out the front door. Daniel felt the room spin. That information was never digitized. It lived only in the fading memories he had shared with Clara during late-night confessions over cheap wine in their first apartment.
"How does a box in the wall know about my father's old toolbox?" Daniel whispered, his hand hovering inches from the exposed wires.
"Julian didn't just record your life here," Clara confessed, her composure completely shattering as she slid down the wall until she sat flat on the hardwood floor, her knees pulled up to her chest. "He digitized your history before you even met me. Every job application, every medical record, every late-night Google search you thought you deleted. He built a predictive behavioral profile."
Daniel knelt beside her, his anger momentarily eclipsed by a chilling confusion. "Why would your brother spend years cataloging my existence? We were just normal people, Clara. I'm an architect. You teach high school literature. We live in the suburbs."
"We live in the suburbs because Julian chose this ZIP code," Clara interrupted, grabbing the lapel of his dark blazer with desperate fingers. "He told me that men like you—men with your specific genetic lineage—were being systematically tracked by a private intelligence collective. He said marrying you was the only way to keep you inside a controlled environment where he could protect you."
Daniel gently peeled her fingers away from his jacket, standing up with a stiffness in his spine. The explanation sounded less like a spy thriller and more like the paranoid delusion of a fractured mind. Yet the blinking red light inside the wall was undeniably real, pulsing in time with his racing heartbeat.
"If Julian wanted to protect me, why did he hide cameras in my daughter's hallway?" Daniel asked, his voice shaking with restrained fury.

Before Clara could formulate an answer, the front doorbell chimed twice, followed by the heavy, deliberate thud of a fist striking the solid oak door.
