Chapter 9 - The Missing Heir

The morning sun cast long, golden beams across the ruined dining room, illuminating the spot where the plate of food had been shattered just twelve hours earlier. The federal agents had cleared out the bulk of their equipment, leaving behind stacks of evidence boxes and yellow caution tape sealing off Victoria’s private study.
Clara sat at the mahogany dining table, a steaming cup of black coffee warming her hands. Across from her sat Elena and Marcus, reviewing the preliminary audit reports that had been pulled from the server banks overnight.
"The debt is staggering," Elena sighed, rubbing her temples. "Mother leveraged nearly eighty percent of the company’s assets against speculative real estate ventures in the Cayman Islands that have already collapsed. If we don't declare restructuring by Monday, the entire enterprise goes into liquidation."
Marcus looked up from his tablet, frowning deeply. "Liquidation might actually be a blessing in disguise, Elena. It frees us from the toxic legacy. But we have a more immediate problem." He glanced toward the grand staircase. "Where is Richard?"
Clara’s coffee cup paused halfway to her lips. She had almost forgotten about her husband in the whirlwind of Elena’s return and Victoria’s arrest. "The agents searched the guest wing at dawn. His clothes were gone, along with my emergency passport and twenty thousand dollars in cash from the safe in the mudroom."
"He didn't just run," Elena said, her expression turning grim. "He must have accessed the secondary server room before the federal lockdown. If Richard has the master encryption keys to the intellectual property database, he can sell our proprietary pharmaceutical patents to our biggest overseas competitor before the courts freeze his accounts."
Clara stood up so fast her chair screeched against the floorboards. "The experimental cancer research data. If Richard hands that over to Apex Pharma, the company will be hit with multi-billion-dollar breach-of-trust lawsuits that will bankrupt us before we even get out of receivership."
"We need to find him, and fast," Marcus said, grabbing his car keys from the table. "He won't be able to fly out of the municipal airport without setting off federal flags, but he has a private airstrip at the lake house two hours north."
Before Marcus could head for the door, the double doors of the dining room swung open, and Agent Miller walked in, holding a tablet with a live security feed.
"We tracked Richard's cell phone signal," Agent Miller announced, her voice all business. "He didn't go north. He’s currently parked in the underground parking garage of the Sterling Enterprises downtown headquarters, and he’s hooked a direct-interface drive into the main mainframe."
Clara grabbed her coat from the back of her chair. "He’s downloading the patent database right now."
"Not if we beat him there," Elena said, standing up with fierce determination in her eyes. "Marcus, get the car. Clara, you're coming with me. We are going to end this family's toxic cycle once and for all."

As the three of them rushed out toward the waiting sedan, none of them noticed the small figure of seven-year-old Leo standing quietly at the top of the stairs, watching them leave with wide, knowing eyes that looked far too old for a child of his years.
